About Sortavala

Perched on the north shore of Lake Ladoga, Sortavala is a historic town in Russia’s Republic of Karelia that formerly belonged to both Sweden and Finland. It was ceded to the Soviet Union after the Winter War of 1940 and now serves as a popular base for adventurers wanting to explore the Karelian wilderness.

Things to do

Art enthusiasts shouldn’t miss a visit to Muzey Chastnoy Kollektsii Kronida Gogoleva, which celebrates the work of one of Russia’s most talented wood carving artists. Admire the beautifully carved works on display in the first-floor gallery before heading upstairs to check out the rotating temporary exhibitions. Also of cultural significance is the prominent statue by Alpo Sailo that celebrates the famous folk music artist Petri Shemeikka.

Interested in the local history? Pay a visit to Muzey Severnogo Priladozh’ya, an intricately decorated yellow building that houses artefacts related to the development of Sortavala. Browse the period furnishings, costumes and old banknotes on display while enjoying the waterfront views from the museum’s lakeside setting.

Sortavala is a stone’s throw from Lagoda Skerries National Park, which encompasses the rocky lakeshore to the town’s south. You can stretch your legs along one of the scenic hiking trails or cast a fishing line to see what’s biting before coming face-to-face with the native ringed seals that inhabit the offshore islands.

Getting around

Sortavala is around 3.5 hours’ drive from St Petersburg and is connected along the Khiytola-Matkaselka railway to Sortavala Station. Ferries travel from the Pristan’ marina to destinations around Lake Lagoda while the centre of Sortavala is compact enough to explore on foot. Having your own vehicle is best for visiting the region’s natural attractions.
