With its ancient fortresses, marble-clad museums and elegant fountains, Skopje lives up to its reputation as Macedonia's most cosmopolitan city. Over the centuries it’s fallen under the rule of the Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans, so there's a wealth of history to discover. There's also a vibrant social scene, with Skopje boasting some of the country's best bars, cafes and restaurants.

Things to do

Perched on a hillside, Carsija is a historic Turkish neighbourhood. It offers a fascinating glimpse at the city's Ottoman legacy, with winding streets lined with mosques, teahouses and spice bazaars. The neighbourhood is also home to a handful of traditional Ottoman inns where you can sample local delicacies like stuffed vine leaves and roasted pork ribs.

Housed in a gleaming marble palace, the Archaeological Museum of Macedonia is the grandfather of Skopje's cultural attractions. Inside you'll find three floors showcasing Byzantine treasures, ancient skulls and folk costumes.

Art aficionados shouldn't miss the National Gallery of Macedonia. It's housed in the magnificent Daut Pasha Hamam, once the largest Turkish bathhouse outside of Istanbul. Visit all seven of its rooms to discover an incredible collection of contemporary art.

For lively nightlife, head to Plostad Makedonija, a spacious square that anchors the city. It's studded with statues honouring national heroes, including the impressive "Warrior on a Horse" monument. Every evening the fountains around the monument light up and treat spectators to a mesmerising sound and light show.

Getting around

Skopje is serviced by a fleet of red double-decker buses that operate throughout the city. They're a great way to get around and stop at most major sites and attractions. Taxis are available, with the trip to Skopje "Alexander the Great" Airport taking around 25 minutes.
