Where to stay in Siem Reap

About Siem Reap

Gateway to the iconic ruins of Angkor, Siem Reap is a bustling town on the northern edge of Tonle Sap lake. It’s a centre for local arts and crafts, with vibrant markets and artisan workshops to discover, as well as museums exploring Cambodia’s rich history.

Things to do

Visit the Khmer ruins of the Angkor Archaeological Park to explore a vast complex built between the 9th and 15th centuries. Watch sunrise over the beautifully preserved main temple of Angkor Wat, photograph the carved faces of the Bayon Temple and witness the tree-enveloped Ta Prohm.

Gain insight into the history of Cambodia at the Landmine Museum and School, which serves as a quiet reminder of the Khmer Rouge legacy. It was founded by a former child soldier as a place of reflection and to support locals whose lives have been impacted by landmines.

Siem Reap makes a great base for visiting the stilt villages of Tonle Sap, the immense lake that sprawls to the south of the city. Explore the working Khmer village of Kompong Khleang, which has houses stretching over the water, then journey to Prek Toal Bird Sanctuary to meet some of Cambodia’s most endangered species.

Once the sun goes down, head to the lively Angkor Night Market in the heart of Siem Reap where more than 200 vendors set up shop. Look for unique local handicrafts and souvenirs while sampling the authentic Cambodian street food.

Getting around

Siem Reap International Airport is around 15 minutes’ drive north-west of the city centre. Motorbike taxis and tuk-tuks are the main transport options around Siem Reap, but you can also hire bicycles to explore at your leisure.
