Things to do
Founded in 1340 by St Sergius Radonezh, the Trinity Monastery of Saint Sergius has a fascinating collection of religious buildings, including the golden-domed Trinity Cathedral and the star-studded Cathedral of Assumption. Don’t miss seeing the five-tiered Baroque bell tower, considered Russia’s tallest.
Are you keen to try Russia’s traditional cuisine? Located by the monastery walls, Russkiy Dvorik Restaurant features live folk music and serves classic dishes, such as “Zharkoye”, a rich beef and potato stew served with sour cream.
Tour the remarkable redbrick cathedral and unique underground prayer caves of Chernigovsky Skete, the city’s second monastery. Established in 1847, the multi-domed Chernigovsky Cathedral stands at the center of the monastery. Walk beneath the gateway’s towering belfry and venture inside to see the relics of Elder Barabas.
If you’re traveling with kids, visit the Toy Museum to explore a rotating exhibition of traditional Russian toys from across the ages. Meander through the exhibit halls displaying elaborate doll houses donated by the royal family and a rich collection of wooden matryoshka dolls. Children and adults can even take part in a toy making class.
You can fly into Sheremetyevo International Airport, located 84 kilometers away. Sergiev Posad is a two-hour drive north-east of Moscow. Once in Sergiev Posad, the main sights can be reached on foot.
