The city’s must-see attraction is the Promenade des Anglais, which runs for seven kilometres along the sparkling turquoise bay and is a favourite place for locals to cycle, skate or take an afternoon stroll. Castel Plage is the best beach for lounging under a shady umbrella with a cocktail, while Blue Beach attracts sports enthusiasts for its water skiing and parasailing opportunities.

The grand Palais Masséna is now a museum, highlighting the history of Nice over the last two centuries throughout its extravagant marble halls. Nice is full of galleries, but if you only see one, make it the Matisse Museum, with its vibrant Modernist paintings and bronze sculptures.

The best views in Nice are from the Parc du Château, a ruined castle surrounded by a lush park that features an impressive waterfall and scenic walking trails. Cimiez Monastery is another great option to escape the heat and enjoy verdant gardens.

Get lost in the meandering streets of the old town and sample the delicacies on offer in its cafes and patisseries. You will be charmed by the fruit and flower markets of Cours Saleya, full of colour and lively ambience, and the curios and knick-knacks on sale at the Nice Flea Market.

Getting around

Nice’s integrated bus and tram system links the main train station with the downtown shopping area and waterfront, while an express bus shuttles passengers to Nice Airport. Most of the tourist attractions are a few minutes’ walk from each other in the centre of town, but Vélo Bleu public bicycles are also available for rent.
