Where to stay in Moscow

About Moscow

Serving as the charismatic capital of Russia for more than eight centuries, Moscow is a sprawling metropolis along the Moskva River. Architectural landmarks showcase its powerful rule and stand alongside outstanding museums honouring Russia’s rich culture and larger-than-life heroes.

Things to do

No trip to Moscow is complete without visiting iconic Red Square, which has the brick walls of the Kremlin stretching along one side. In the centre lies Lenin’s Mausoleum, where the revolutionary’s body is embalmed, while St. Basil’s famous onion domes tower to the south.

Take a guided tour of the Kremlin Museum Complex, including its collection of royal clothing and chariots, and the Ivan the Great Bell Tower that adjoins the Assumption Belfry. You can also tour the Grand Kremlin Palace to see a glimpse of the official residence of the Russian President.

Moscow is overflowing with impressive art museums, but one of its best is definitely the Tretyakov Gallery. It boasts the world’s most outstanding collection of Russian fine art, from early religious icons to modern works by the likes of Wassily Kandinsky.

Interested in history? The Novodevichy Cemetery is where Anton Chekhov and Boris Yeltsin are laid to rest and lies adjacent to the Novodevichy Convent. This fortress-like building dates back to the early 16th century and is one of the best-preserved complexes in Moscow.

Getting around

Sheremetyevo International Airport is the main gateway to Moscow, situated around 45 minutes’drive north of the city. The metro system is an efficient way to get around the city centre, with most of the main sights within a short walk from one another.
