About Marignane

Home to Marseille Provence Airport, Marignane is a historic town overlooking the Lagoon de Berre that has strong ties to aviation. It was from here that the world’s first seaplane took to the air in 1910 and it’s now the headquarters of Airbus Helicopters, which builds some of the world’s most innovative helicopters.

Things to do in Marignane

Occupying a beautifully restored villa in the heart of Marignane is the Musee Raimu, which celebrates the life of French actor Jules Auguste Muraire. It was created by his granddaughter, Isabelle Nohain-Raimu, with old photographs and original documents on display, as well as interactive exhibits and screenings of “Raimu’s” most popular films.

A short stroll from the villa is the Musee d'Arts et Traditions Populaires, which is housed within three buildings in the historic centre of Marignane. It was created by Albert Reynaud in 1973 and showcases the lifestyle, customs and traditions of the region throughout the centuries. Get up close to antique weaponry, vintage costumes and period artefacts or coincide your visit with one of the changing exhibitions featuring local artists.

One of Marignane’s most attractive buildings is the Château des Covet, a centuries-old castle that houses the Town Hall and a small history museum. Originally established in the medieval period, the castle was altered significantly in the 17th century by Jean-Baptiste Covet, the Lord of Marignane. Marvel at the Italian-inspired facade and climb the grand staircase that leads to the chateau’s richly decorated apartments.
