Stroll through the landscaped gardens of Nizhniy Park, taking in the many monuments and water fountains. At the west end of the park lies the vibrant Peter and Paul’s Chapel, which illuminates the park with its bright-green cupolas and fluorescent-orange walls.

Visit the Lipetsk Museum of Folk Arts and Crafts to see traditional folk costumes, ceramics, embroidery and typical children’s toys. You can take a folk art and crafts masterclass to learn how to make traditional Russian dolls, weave lace or work the pottery wheel.

Encounter rare and wonderful animals from around the world at the seven-hectare Lipetskiy Zoo, home to 300 species, including native brown bears, polar bears, imperial eagles and Amur tigers. See piranhas in action in the aquarium, before feeding chickens, rabbits and goats in the children’s petting area.

Experience local culture at Petrovsky Market, a legacy of the Soviet era. The open-air stalls overflow with regional colors and sell everything from fur hats and leather handbags to vintage lamps and tea sets. After finding a unique souvenir, sample some Russian street food, such as “Blini”, a delicious crepe-like pancake.

Getting around

Voronezh-Chertovitskoye International Airport is a 2.5-hour train or five-hour bus from Lipetsk. Overnight trains and buses arrive from Moscow, Saint Petersburg and Sochi, while the M4 and M6 motorways service Lipetsk. Buses, taxis and pedestrian-friendly streets make exploring Lipetsk easy.
