About Changzhi

Changzhi is a scenic city surrounded by the forested hillsides and the towering Taihang Mountains. The city centre is filled with leafy parks and sizzling street-food stalls, while the surrounding region reveals one of China's best-known national parks.

Things to do in Changzhi

Taihang Mountain Grand Canyon National Forest Park showcases the natural beauty of Huguan County. The park is filled with rugged peaks, glassy pools and cascading waterfalls. You can also explore hidden limestone caves and visit the ancient Zhenze Palace, which dates back to the Tang dynasty. If you're feeling adventurous, sign up for white-water rafting trips in the canyon.

Built from steely grey stone, Shangdang Gate guards the south-east entrance to the city. It was raised in the Ming dynasty and is topped by a pair of lofty towers. One houses a gleaming bronze bell and the other a drum, which was used for ceremonies, warnings and long-distance communication with nearby towns and villages.

It's easy to spend hours getting lost in Chengqu, a historic district in the heart of Changzhi. It's dotted with beautifully restored temples. The historic shopfronts house tea houses, herbalists and traditional restaurants.

Changzhi is strewn with street-food stalls selling local delicacies, such as "shaomai" pork dumplings, fried flatbread and sour noodle soup. Browse local vendors around Huimin Lane, then wash down your meal with a glass of “lujiu”, a local beverage made from fermented wine and herbs.

Getting around Changzhi

Parts of Changzhi are easy to get around on foot, including Chengqu. The city is also well-serviced by buses and taxis. Changzhi Airport is located 7.5 kilometres north of the city centre.
