About Kagoshima

Located on the stunning Japanese island of Kyushu, Kagoshima is often referred to as the “Naples of the Eastern world” due to its beautiful coastal surroundings, magnificent bay and warm climate. The city is the capital of the Kagoshima Prefecture and the largest in the area, as a major and historical centre of south-western Japan. It is also defined by the looming Sakurajima volcano that dramatically looks over the city and, as an active natural landmark, often dumps ash over the streets of Kagoshima.

The most epic and iconic feature of Kagoshima is its volcano, Sakurajima, which visitors can reach by ferry and hike up for stunning views over the city and a close-up experience of an active volcano, which covers any hiker in a layer of volcanic ash. There are also various cultural attractions, such as the Tsurumaru Castle, a historic reminder of the infamous Satsuma Rebellion, the Kagoshima Prefectural Museum of Culture, which reveals the history of the local area, and the fun Kagoshima City Aquarium. Visitors can also try the local cuisine and drinks, especially known for its dish of sweet potato shochu, at the many restaurants, or shop at the small stores and markets for typical Japanese souvenirs. The coastal location is also perfect for sea kayaking in the shadow of the Sakurajima volcano, or other activities like cycling and hiking, although visitors can also find plenty of spots to relax, sunbathe and enjoy the magnificent island views.

International visitors can reach Kagoshima by travelling to the local airport of the same name, which offers bus routes into the city centre and flights to other nearby islands. There is also a central train station of Kagoshima, which also provides many transport links throughout Japan and it is even possible to travel to Tokyo within seven hours. Buses and ferries also navigate the area, with Kagoshima ferry terminal being one of the busiest in the country.

The surrounding area of Kagoshima was once known as Satsuma Domain, as the territory for the Shimazu Clan for centuries and became the capital during the 17th Century. Through its involvement in the Satsuma Rebellion, the city was the location of stories surrounding legendary figures and warriors. It became an industrial centre in the 19th Century and developed into a tourist attraction for its coastal beauty and impressive volcano, which regularly scatters ash over the city but remains relatively dormant.
