About Saquarema

Nicknamed the “Surfing Capital of Brazil”, Saquarema overlooks the Atlantic Ocean in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Its legendary beach and point breaks attract surfers from around the globe, including professionals competing on the World Surf League Championship Tour. Saquarema is also the site of one of the most important shell mounds discovered in Brazil.

Things to do in Saquarema

Perched atop a hill overlooking the Atlantic Ocean is the Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora de Nazareth, which was built in 1820 on the site of an old chapel. Its devotion is associated with sailors and fishermen and the church offers sweeping views across Saquarema. Admire its whitewashed exterior and squat bell tower before experiencing its tranquil interior.

Saquarema is surrounded by beautiful beaches, many of which offer favourable surfing conditions. Head to Praia de Itauna to learn to surf with one of the local schools or brave the long, left-hand wave that breaks just offshore. Alternatively, head to Praia da Vila to watch the big-wave surfers in action. Both national and international surfing competitions are regularly held in Saquarema.

History buffs can visit the Museu do Sambaqui da Beirada, which preserves an ancient shell mound. Discovered by a local fisherman, this sambaqui comprises oyster shells and kitchen scraps as well as axe blades, animal teeth and skeletons of indigenous inhabitants. While browsing the objects uncovered here, you can learn about the eating habitats and funerary practices of prehistoric communities in the region.

Getting around Saquarema
