A university city, Gottingen is a fantastic place to experience Germany’s vibrant student culture. More than 30,000 students descend on the historic town during the semester, with the majority attending the University of Göttingen. The university is home to three botanic gardens, as well as a handful of fascinating museums.

The city has medieval roots and is a wonderful place to for history buffs to explore. Stroll down Barfüsser-strasse and admire the beautifully preserved half-timbered houses that line the street, then stop for a coffee in the pleasant Markt district. Beyond the city itself, Göttingen also serves as a jumping point to the picturesque countryside of the upper Weser Valley.

Gottingen is located near Lower Saxony, close to the Hesse border. It sits halfway between Bonn and Berlin, with the River Leine cutting right through the town. Buses run throughout the city, as well as to neighbouring villages. Gottingen is also serviced by its own train station, which sits to the west of the medieval town centre.

Since opening its doors in 1734, the University of Göttingen has produced over 40 Nobel Prize winners. As well as pioneering microbiologists, award-winning doctors and world-renowned scientists, alumni include the legendary Brothers Grimm. To some, this makes Göttingen a genuine fairy-tale city.
