About Central Moscow

Central Moscow has much to offer visitors. With a variety of museums and cultural attractions, restaurants, bars and nightlife, there is something to suit all tastes. The central district incorporates Red Square, The Moscow Kremlin, Tverskaya Street and riverside attractions. Moscow is a cool, elegant city with intriguing history and an old-world charm which attracts visitors to return time and time again.

A good place to begin an exploration of Central Moscow is by the Moskva River near Kremlevskaya Nab. Visitors can stroll along the waterfront or venture behind the deep red walls of the Moscow Kremlin. The Kremlin is home to palaces, museums, and several cathedrals. One highlight is the beautiful Dormition Cathedral with its gold-topped domes. The striking Russian Orthodox cathedral dates to the 14th century. The interior is home to amazing treasures, where the fresco covered pillars and detailed decorations are a sight to behold. A short walk away is the fairytale cathedral of St. Basil, its kaleidoscope of colours captivating onlookers from all angles. The richly adorned, rainbow coloured, onion-shaped domes make this an iconic landmark of Moscow. The best place for shopping and nightlife is around Tverskaya Street. Old Russian tea rooms sit side by side with extensive bookshops and stores where local delicacies can be found. The city centre is also home to theatres and entertainment venues. Visitors with interest in opera and ballet can venture to the Bolshoi Theatre to enjoy a performance. Art and Literature lovers should continue to Pushkinskaya Square, with monuments, art galleries, cinemas and cafes, it’s a popular city meeting place where visitors can blend with locals.

Central Moscow is easy to walk around with many of the big-ticket attractions within 30 minutes’ walk of each other. The city is served by an excellent bus and metro network which stop at all major points of interest. Taxis and Uber are also readily available.

The first reference of Moscow dates to 1147, at the time it was a small town on the border of Vladimir-Suzdal Principality. During the era of Peter the Great, the capital was moved from Moscow to St. Petersburg by the Baltic Sea. When Moscow lost its status as capital, many residents moved away. Then during the 1700s, cobbled streets were built while permanent street lighting was introduced, and the population began to increase again slowly. The city has had a tumultuous past, which can be realised in the buildings and museums around Central Moscow. Today, it’s a fascinating place, with incredible architecture, exceptional dining and a rich heritage to explore.
