Known as the “Salsa Capital of Columbia”, the vibrant city of Cali beats to its own rhythm amidst surrounding sugar cane fields and 18th-century colonial haciendas. Dance clubs and cathedrals stand side by side in the Old Quarter, as Cali showcases its cultural heritage through its unique blend of old and new.

Things to do

You shouldn’t visit Cali without giving salsa dancing a whirl. Head to the Tin Tin Deo district for small clubs and bars, as well as the second-floor Salsa Zone. Check out Zaperoco Salsa Bar to find local partners willing to teach you a few new steps.

Spend an afternoon in Barrio San Antonio, the historic centre of Cali that’s full of colonial-era buildings, trendy cafes, hideaway bars and upscale restaurants. Track down film locations from the TV show “Narcos”, such as Edificio Coltabaco and Plaza de Caicedo.

Traveling with the family? Head over to the to see exotic wildlife, tigers, enormous iguanas, monkeys and pink flamingos at Zoológico de Cali. Peek at more than 15 technicoloured butterfly species living at the Andoke Butterfly Farm, just outside the city.

Pay tribute to felines and the renowned Columbian artist Hernando Tejada at the Gato de Tejada park. You’ll find a giant, whimsical cat sculpture and another 15 small feline statues created in honour of the artist. Another curiosity of Cali’s art scene is the enormous Cristo Rey statue of Jesus looming over the city, accessible from a hilly path ending in expansive scenic views.

Getting around

A public bus system operates throughout Cali, while taxis and ride-share companies provide alternative means of transportation. For a more convenient way of getting around, you can also rent a car in the city centre.
