Shangri-La Far Eastern, Taipei

LikedWe liked the location in a nice neighborhood and well connected to the points of our interest. The monumental architecture and design of this hotel are still holding true to it's ambition, even if it shows signs of aging. Our room had a great view on Taipei, it was spacious and practical; and we loved the peace and quiet it offered when we returned from the bustling city. There was good variety of choices for breakfast. Roof-top pool was nice and we regret we haven't had time to visit the bar that looked appealing.

DislikedIt's been a while since our last stay at Shangri-La hotels, but we felt that the service in this property was not as good as we remember from our previous stays. Our overall experience is positive, but details like the check-in procedure which lasted a bit longer, the coffee offered on self-service machines at breakfast, the overcooked bacon and the bed comfort are below par other similar chains.

LikedThe breakfast fruit juice section was very good. Pastry section was also very good. The service staff was generally very polite and ready to serve especially the staff from the Club Lounge. Club Lounge selection of food and drinks offered was reasonably good. Although the Hotel is quite old you can see that effort has been made to upgrade the facilities of rooms and outlook of the hotel to as modern as possible. I would not say that this is a dated hotel. The Earthquake warning system was actually very good. Keep the hotel guest informed and clear instruction during the quake and updated the progress of the quake via intercom system. Not confuse as to what to do during the quake. Thumbs Up!!!

DislikedThe breakfast has a very big selection of food. But lack taste in the cooking. It may be my personal preference. Everything tasted very bland. Did not not enjoy the breakfast. The key card system of the lift was not working. I could access every floor without a room key card. Not acceptable. The remotes in the room (TV, Day and Night Curtain) did not work properly just a bit irritating. The housekeeper who did our room did not actually vacuum the room. As I could still see scrap (quite a bit) on the carpet after the room was done. It was attend to immediately but should not have happen in the first place. Location was not very good if Subway or Metro is your preferred mode of transport. Buses are conveniently nearby.
