Hotel Carlton On The Grand Canal

LikedI do not know how the Hotel Carlton on the Grand Canal is because when we arrived they informed us that they had to renovate 30 of their 50 rooms. Ours was 1 of them. So we had to walk 10 minutes away to the new hotel. The hotel they moved us to was very nice and new and comfortable. It was the Aquarius Hotel, they have a very nice staff and had an excellent breakfast.

DislikedWe didn’t like that they didn’t inform us that we were to be moved to another hotel in Venice 10 minute walk away. They knew 3 weeks before we arrived. Also I bought the romance package to be ready for us as we arrived on our anniversary. They had a bouquet of flowers in the room and that was it. We had to walk all the way back to the original hotel to have the bottle of wine and snacks (that were supposed to be in our room when we arrived) before the gondola ride and dinner. The snacks were a bowl of potato chips and a bowl of peanuts (which everyone gets anyway.) we got a small plate of old tapas that looked all dried out. We found out because the restaurant wasn’t open until that evening and these were premade in the refrigerator. The gondola ride was great and the dinner was good but the candlelight dinner was something everyone in the restaurant gets. So my point is don’t bother paying the big price for the package just pay for what you want as you go. It’s cheaper and better that way. We just wanted it to be all taken care of for our special day.

LikedConvenient location across from the train station, we’re able to book tours, decent breakfast and a nice room.

DislikedVery cold, no doona cover and no heating! Were given the wrong room and they seemed frustrated when we asked to switch to the one we had paid for. Roof top bar was closed and breakfast had no record of our purchase both mornings despite having paid.

DislikedThe room was very very cold and it wouldn’t warm up. No tea or coffee making facilities.

LikedHotel staff was helpful with suggestions and things to do in town.

DislikedThis is not a 4 star hotel. The mattress was worn out and very worn. The hotel comforter and sheets were scratchy. It was also very cold as they had no heat. Mold was on the walls. Rooms need updating and lack items like a coffee maker, iron, etc. The hotel room was depressing.

LikedGreat location, really nice staff. They help us with all what we needed. Hotel was very authentic, in venetian style.

DislikedThere wasn’t a big offer for breakfast.
