About Kakamega, Kenya

Kakamega is a laid-back village that showcases Kenya through a local lens. Things to do in Kakamega

A stone’s throw from the town centre, Kakamega Forest Reserve is a sanctuary for native wildlife. Well-marked trails wind through the lush rainforest and showcase the incredible biodiversity of East Africa. The popular Isiukhu Trail takes several hours to complete and leads hikers to a cascading waterfall. As you walk, watch for monkeys and baboons swinging in the trees.

Hike or drive up to Buyanga Hill for sweeping views over the rainforest and the Nandi Escarpment. The five-hour return hike to Lirhanda Hill offers sweeping views over the emerald-green canopy. Get started early to enjoy a spectacular sunrise.

Three kilometres from the town centre is the Crying Stone of Ilesi, a local landmark steeped in myth and legend. The stone resembles a human torso, with a continuous stream of water flowing from the eyes to the waist.

On Wednesdays and Saturdays, Kakamega hosts bustling markets selling fresh produce and handmade souvenirs. Be sure to try “ugali”, a local specialty made with maize flour porridge, stewed chicken and mixed vegetables.

Getting around Kakamega

Taxis are often the fastest and most comfortable way to get around Kakamega. You can also hail local tuk-tuks and “boda boda” motorcycle taxis while the city is also well-serviced by local buses and minivans called “matatus”. Kisumu International Airport is a 1.5-hour drive south.
