Nestled in the Adirondack Mountains, Saranac Lake is an attractive village named after its surrounding lakes. It is often ranked as one of the “Best Small Towns in America”, with an atmospheric downtown area, historic architecture and magnificent natural landscapes to explore.
Stroll through the downtown area to admire Saranac Lake’s beautiful buildings, dozens of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Antique stores, art galleries and cafes line the streets, together with restaurants serving classic American fare. Nearby is the Robert Louis Stevenson Cottage where the Scottish author once lived.
Don’t miss a visit to the Saranac Laboratory Museum, a former tuberculosis research centre that now serves as a local history museum. Its exhibits include scientific equipment and artefacts about the cultural heritage of the region. Be sure to read the personal stories of those who were treated here.
Getting there
Adirondack Regional Airport is 15 minutes’ drive from Saranac Lake and has regular flights to Boston and New York. The much larger Albany International Airport is 2.5 hours away. Renting a car is the most convenient way of getting to Saranac Lake and the village is small enough to explore on foot.
