About Elche

Elche is a sun-drenched city surrounded by lush palm trees. Stroll around the historic centre filled with centuries-old architecture and discover the dynamic arts and cultural scene. A sprawling date palm grove laid out in the 10th century AD has earned Elche its “City of Palms” nickname.

Things to do in Elche

Get lost in the Palmeral of Elche, a sprawling oasis and UNESCO World Heritage Site. The palm grove is one of the largest in Europe and is a fascinating example of Arabian agriculture. Take a guided tour through the grove and visit the Museo del Palmerar in the city centre to learn more about the famous date palms.

Dine at local tapas bars and experience the flavours of Alicante. Try favourites like “gambas al ajillo” garlic shrimp and “mojama de atun” dried tuna drizzled with olive oil. You’ll also see specialty dishes like “arroz a banda” seafood paella cooked in fish broth featured on menus. Pair your meal with DOP wines from the Alicante region.

Explore a maze of narrow streets and alleys in Vila Murada, one of the oldest neighbourhoods in the city. Set on the banks of the Vinalopo River, the district is home to historical landmarks like the Basilica of Santa Maria. Built on the site of a Muslim mosque, the grand church features an intricate Baroque façade and soaring central dome.

Visit Yacimiento Arqueológico L'Alcúdia, a well-preserved archaeological site just outside the town. The Dama de Elche, an Iberian treasure now on display in Madrid, was discovered at the site in the late 1800s. Don’t miss the excellent on-site museum where you can see artefacts dated to Neolithic times.
