Once a rural township, Luzhu is now a bustling residential district north of Taoyuan City. It takes its name from the wild reeds that once blanketed the region and were used by locals for building their dwellings. Today, its downtown district is clustered with high-rise apartments housing Taipei workers.
Things to do in Luzhu District
On the northwestern edge of Luzhu District is the Zhuwei Fish Harbor, a historic port that has been transformed into an entertainment and dining destination. The specialty here is seafood, with fresh fish delivered directly to the local stalls. Watch the skilled chefs in action as they prepare authentic Taiwanese dishes, then feast while admiring the steel-arched Rainbow Bridge illuminated after dark.
Adjacent to the 100-year-old Chengsheng Palace is the Hang Hau Painted Village, a cluster of buildings that have been lovingly adorned by the locals with murals. The artwork brings to life the region’s rural scenery, with water buffalo working the fields and chickens being fed in courtyards. The village is particularly stunning in the autumn when the cosmos flowers are in bloom.
For elevated views of Taoyuan City, follow the winding road that snakes its way up the slopes of Dagu Shan. Watch the ships coming and going along the coastline or marvel at the planes taking off from Taiwan’s largest and busiest international airport. In addition to stretching your legs along one of Dagu Shan’s short trails, you can take advantage of its eagle viewing platform.
Getting around Luzhu District
Luzhu District is around 30 minutes’ drive from Taoyuan Station and 15 minutes from the terminal buildings of Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport. Subway services connect along the Taoyuan Airport Line to Kengkou and Shanbi MRT stations and buses travel throughout the district, connecting most of its attractions.
