The hotel is clean and comfortable and the lobby is impressive. The staff were generally helpful. The Free Wifi was also very useful. The room was much better than expected considering the price - it was clean and spacious. No complaints about the hotel and the food in the Grill was excellent. The area is a little run down at the top of Market Street and there are plenty of homeless knocking around. San Francisco has loads of homeless in general so this shouldn't be a knock against the hotel. There is a BART stop and a bus stop right outside the hotel door anyway - so if you wanted to avoid this element then you have the option. I'd recommend this hotel.

Keep away from this hotel. Very unprofessional staff and security very spitful. Very dirty rooms.

I loved the fact that I could walk the 1.5 miles to where I needed to take a teacher certification test. The shower stall drain didn't work and I had to call a maintenance man. What a great place! Thanks to you my son and I got to stay in a swanky upscale and historic hotel. We are grateful and thankful.

Hotel is more than adequate.we felt that it should have been highlighted that it was abot 3 blocks from Powell St and that the neighbourhood had poorer/undesirsble elements

Hotel was beautiful, listed as a national historic site, vaulted ceilings, glass chandeliers and marble columns, right on the bus line and 3 blocks from cable car. Room was exceptional, but no toilet paper. Called front desk, but no response, so we had to use tissues. Beds were comfortable and nice view at night of the lighted dome(City Hall?). Desk and bellhops were friendly, as was the car parking attendants. Starbucks in the lobby was convenient as they were open at 5am. Will definately stay again

Built after the 1906 earthquake, lots of marble and hardwood in the check-in/lobby/restaurant-bar area and was one of the better hotels at the time. A good location near the Civic Center, UN building, museums, and across the street from the Lyceum Theater. Staff was very friendly and helpful, but check-in on Sunday afternoon was slow. Hotel is on the same corner as the Civic Center BART and Muni Bus station on Market, transportation was easy to use, especially to the Piers and Wharf and Cable car. Room service was good and not a long wait. The only real drawbacks were the room was older and not large, although clean and well-maintained, and Market St between 8th and Powell is shaky. We avoided walking there and used BART between the hotel and Powell. We liked it and would go there again

My bf and I stayed one night at the Whitcomb. The valet boys seemed confused when taking our car and all gave us different instructions, leaving us uneasy on whether or not we should be leaving the car with them...We are a younger couple and the front desk seemed to treat the other customers as if they were more important than us. The room was small and right as we were about to sleep a huge cockroach was spotted crawling across the floor! We immediately called the front desk asking for a room change and the supervisor at the time was extremely rude. He would not help us at all, gave us more than enough attitude, and then hung up on us saying he had other customers. We then went down to the front desk and talked to the same supervisor. We were then given even more attitude and told that we could be checked out and leave the hotel or talk to the manager in the morning. We had an uneasy night sleep with cockroaches and then woke up early to speak with the manager. I fell in love with the manager! He was more than helpful and extremely helpful, and immediately gave us a refund for all the misery we had gone through. He was what saved this hotel from being a complete nightmare. The only other good thing was the location of the hotel, right next to the bart and a starbucks downstairs.

Was able to check in early. The lobby was much nicer than the rooms. Rooms were clean.

We got a special winter rate so the price was right for us. For 2.5 star hotel we were quite surprised with how nice it was and how big the room was, although some people would complai that the bathroom was "tired". My only gripe was that you could hear EVERYTHING through the walls, which was only an issue for us on the last night as both adjacent rooms were occupied.

We recently did a whirlwind tour of four different destinations, the Hotel Whitcomb was sandwiched in between two other hotels. It didn't even come close to the others, while being by far the most expensive. Our other destinations were in the high end also when it came to cost, so we were comparing apples to apples. We were excited about the history of the hotel, but did not expect it to SMELL like the history. The old smell was very overwhelming, there has to be some kind of way to make the rooms smell less old! I will say that the beds were very comfortable! I just think that a few upgrades to the rooms could go a long way. The location of the hotel was very convenient to everything we wanted to see. We were able to walk to many of our destinations or we just grabbed a trolley car to further destinations.

The hotel was nice, clean, and friendly staff. Though concierge would be a bit more friendly. The doorman was a wealth of information!! There are some bums around, but this is right in the middle of a very large city, and would expect that in most any large city. The room was small, but provided all the necessities of a clean bed, tv and shower. I don't go on vacation to stay locked up in a hotel room anyway. The restroom was small, and could use room to put my daily items, but I managed just fine. I loved the nice hot shower. Though I never ate in the adjoining restaurant, it looked busy every night. To sum it up, the hotel is in a great spot with the BART/Muni station right out the door, and a trolly station within eye shot of the door way. The Union Square shopping district with the cable car line is an easy walk. I would have no problems booking another stay at this hotel. I love SF!

The BART lets off right in front, this is the SOMA district and the Orpheum is right across the street. I walked to see WICKED. I walked around at night and there are alot of homeless people but none that were threatening. 2 cafes and a Burger King across the street and a very busy Starbuck inside the Hotel. Wish the hotel had a cocktail lodge.

Location. Small bathroom, no place to keep anything very conjusted rooms. This hotel is very well located and has a good ambience. However, the hotel room are like matchboxes. There is no place to stand in the bathroom. They are tooo small. The bed was comfortable.

The location was decent and for the price it wasn't a bad place to stay. Public transport makes it easy to get to in San Fran. The Bart stops right in front. And you can around easily with that and the Muni system. The hotel has some older work that should be redone... the bathrooms I had were not really up to par. The rooms were being recarpeted. Cleaning could be a little better in those bathrooms with stray hairs all over. The beds and linens were fairly comfy.

We were down for a week and wouldn't have changed a thing! While the rooms are somewhat smallish, it is to be expected of a hotel with tons of history! The staff were friendly, accomodating and helpful. Our room was kept clean and housekeeping was available whenever we decided to leave the hotel room, no big rush to get us out in the morning to tidy up and freshen the towels and linens. Location is great, on all major tranist routes which helped with both sight-seeing and transportation to the airport. While Market Street was a little rough around the edges (homeless people mostly) we never felt threatened, most people very friendly when passing by. Would definately stay in this centrally located hotel again for both the atmosphere and accessability!

Great Location to all the public transportation. I love having the Bart out the front door. Had some really good food too in the Market St. Grill. Great place and the lobby is just Grand.
