Location Description:
The town of Windermere originally called Birthwaite until the Kendel and Windermere Rail company built a train station in the village and called it Windermere Station, a name which has been associated with the town and lake since. The train station itself is a site to see as are the cottages built in 1849 for the rail executives and designed by the Famous architect Augustus Pugin. One of the cottages even contains a replica of the fireplace he designed in the Palace of Westminster. Then there is Blackwell house, a fantastic example of the Arts and Crafts period which has recently been restored to its former glory. The Lake is also home to Brockhole, the Lake District Visitor Centre which houses several interactive features detailing the story of how the National park came to be.
