We stayed at the hotel [or should it be called a ship, given the nautical theme] for two glorious weeks. Nobody explained the "nautical theme" before we arrived, so let me enlighten you. The hotel is deemed a ship, the MS VOYAGER, and it "sails" to a different port over night, resulting in the lobby, restaurant and staff being dressed in a style to reflect the new "port" we had arrived in. This fun idea was most reflected in the restaurant at the sumptuous evening dinners, when the chefs tried to provide cuisine that reflected the new "location". [Rome = lots of pasta, Sydney = steaks and prawns etc etc]. It really was a novel idea in my experience, and it worked for everyone I met. From the impressive entrance foyer, to the warm and smiling welcome from the staff, out first impressions were very good indeed. The location is superb, the grounds magnificent, and the room of a very good size and standard. We were fortunate in that our balcony looked over one of the pools and out to the Indian Ocean, but it seemed that all views, even those looking more inwards, were not crowded. Like most guests, we were on an All Inclusive package, which is pretty much essential as there are not many options outside the hotel compound or in Mombassa itself. Pleased to report that the food, both in variety and standard, was very good indeed. We found we didn't need to take lunch, so opted to have light snacks at the poolside bar mid afternoon, included in the cost. The hotel entertainment staff excel themselves night after night, not least with brilliant cut down versions of well known musicals such as The Lion King and Cats. The participants were obviously enjoying every second, and the guests did too. Really quite brilliant. If you are not going on a Safari, then do still make the effort to leave the hotel compound now and then. Local hotel taxi drivers will give you very good guided tours of Mombassa and it's old quarter, and don't miss the chance to visit the special little village on the way into Mombassa which is occupied by a tribe that make all the wood carvings you will see in the shops and stalls. Quite fascinating. There is also an Eco Park nearby [15 minutes by taxi] which is a great afternoon out. Here they preserve and treat damaged and endangered animals, sometimes being able to release them back into the wild. I never thought ever of us would have a 5 metre Boa Constrictor draped around us, but it was hell of an experience, and don't miss feeding time for the Hippo's or the Crocodiles. More than memorable. I have traveled extensively, but have rarely been truly sad to have to leave a place. We both were when we left The Voyager Beach Resort but we are coming back in January 2009, and can't wait. In fact on this trip we plan to be married there, so maybe see you at the bar.
