The staff here are so helpful it makes up for any short-comings with regards to the relatively standard traditional décor. This independently run hotel is a real treat and the waiting staff and concierge could not have been more kind with my wheelchair bound grandma. Thank you.

MIXED FEELINGS FOR 4 STAR HOTELA difficult review to write because what they did right was brilliant - ie the staff - every single member of staff we had dealings with was pleasant, courteous and helpful. The restaurant was also superb, lovely breakfasts and evening dinner (a little pricey but probably the norm for a 4* establishment). The mixed bag of marks reflects a few issues - on checking in we were shown to a very small room then we noticed the key card showed a stay of only one night (not the two we had booked). We also noticed that the welcome card on the dresser was for another guest. We phoned down to reception who immediately apologised and very swiftly moved us (including a kind upgrade as it was our anniversary) to a junior suite. This was a far better room, and to be honest was about right for what we paid, I would not have been happy in the original room for what we paid, nor for paying the much higher price for the suite. Late at night the toilet flush sprung a leak and water shot out everywhere. Again, very courteously and promptly moved to an identical suite on a higher level but only after my slippers taking a soaking! The service / staff reaction to this was second to none. We take many weekends away and for me the advertised "mix of new and old" had too much old for a 4* establishment/price. In the final room (our 3rd) the safe didnt work, but this was something we chose to live with rather than phone down to reception yet again. The shower was fantastic - excellent power- but the bathroom looked dated. Some touches were very good - ie Bose CD in the room, but somehow it never quite felt 4*. We still enjoyed our stay, the staff made it for us because if they hadn't dealt with the issues the way they did it would have seemed a disaster. The upgrade was a kind gesture so we didn't make heavy weather of the issues, but they were not really what you would expect of a 4* establishment.

Quality Hotel in Newcastle City Centre

Vermont NewcastleWe stayed here because I thoroughly enjoyed my stay on a buseness trip last year. i stay in hotels on average twice a week and the Vermont is one of the best, and certainly THE best when it comes to customer service. I chose it originally because Stewart Maconie described it so glowingly in his excellent book, Pies and Prejudice. he referred, in particular, to a superb receptionsit, Kirsty. We met her on our visit and Maconie wasn't exaggerating - a delightful person who made us feel very welcome.Although the room was quite expensive (£140 for 2), the food was very good value (£49 for two three-course meals and a bottle of wine) and the quality, if not the portions, was excellent.Being an independent hotel, the Vermont has a less corporate feel to it than most and there is a very friendly atmosphere. it is brilliantly situated for Newcastle's vibrant quayside and its fascinating galleries and museums.Highly recommended!

A Smile Goes A Long WayArrived early at about 11am and was not surprised nor unduly concerned to hear room was not ready - except that receptionist seemed to think I was being unreasonable even enquiring whether it was ready - was told that could not guarantee rooms until 2pmLeft luggage with concierge - Paul, who was excellent - attended meeting in town - returned at 2pm. Enquired re room - told not ready until 2pm - it was 2pm - told receptionist that it was 2pm only to be told that she only made it 1.50pm !!! Just then Cathedral clock bells rang for 2pm - her expression did not change despite my asking her if she had heard the bells.Room was pretty good except no aircon and as it was 30 degrees outside this made it uncomfortable - I do not understand hotel ratings system - how can a four star hotel not have aircon in rooms? When checked out following day - different receptionist with foreign accent was much more friendly and smiled. Seems out EU workers understand better than some of the UK workers that a smile can go a long way.

Vermont - 26/06/09Excellent location for city centre & very helpful staff. However the room was small, very poorly lit & certainly not good value for the price.

Superb positionBy the castle with excellent views over the Tyne and it's bridges, if only my window had not been so dirty. Free parking a real bonus in the city centre. Expensive wi-fi via an international provider - this is a common hotel scam which ought to stop - for business travellers wi-fi is as necessary as a bathroom and a TV (no radio in the room by the way). Otherwise a just about adequate 4* hotel, signs of fading grandeur probably acceptable in the economic circumstances.

The first we were given was very small and look right out onto the train tracks. However, after one phone call we were moved to a much better room.

A very nice, clean, comfortable hotel, with the added benefit of on-site parking. Well located for city centre with good views over the Tyne. Would definetly stay here again, but wouldn't bother with the breakfast, although it tasted ok, the "Vermont Platter" seemed awfully bare (2 eggs, bacon, 2 small sauges, 1/2 slice black pudding). I felt for very little extra expense, a truly memorable breakfast could have been provided that could have gone someway to justifying the £17 price tag.

Use it as a last resortGood location but the single room was absolutely tiny. Housekeepinig was not responsive at all - tried to order teacups and an iron and was kept waiting for a single cup and a board that was not fit for ironing.

One night stay overEverything about the room was good except that the room was very cold when we arrived. The temp was ok after the heating had been cranked onto full for nearly an hour, still the bath room was slightly chilly! Apart from that our stay was fine. One great thing about staying at The Vermont on a Saturday night is that you don't have to check out until 7pm on Sunday... totally wonderful!

Hotel did not live up to 4 star for me - the rooms were disappointing for what we paid, there are other hotels with better quality rooms at half the price. Clean hotel, friendly staff and good quality food. Noise from trains is an issue also.

Excellent hotel that is very central. All the best places to eat and drink are within walking distance, as is the station.

far, far too noisy. We should have been advised that there was a wedding in the hotel which seemed to be taking place directly under our room. the noise ran until 1 am

I really enjoyed stayng at the Vermont. The staff were friendly and the service was good. It is an OLD STYLE but quality hotel. I took advantage of the moonlight offer which was worth the money (check with hotel - couples special). Late check out on Sunday was a huge bonus.Make sure when ordering food that the waitress understands order as I ordered Pork but got Salmon. Good job I liked salmon.

The staff were most friendly and helpful. For personal reasons I had to cut short my visit and fly home on a Friday instead of Saturday and reception staff helped me contact the airline to make the arrangements, and in the circumstances waivedthe charge for Friday night even though I had booked on a special 2-night rate. Very highly recommended. I did not eat in the restaurant, but late room service on the Thursday night was tasty and well presented. Recommended.
