A quiet hideaway for divers. Away from traffic and nightlife, Utopia provided superb accommodation and diving. Facilities and equipment are brand new. Rooms are spacious and well decorated. The staff is friendly and helpful. The quality of food is outstanding.

If you want epic diving, excellent food, in a remote location away from night clubs -- Utopia is your place. I can’t say enough great things about the resort and owners. They have truly poured their hearts into this place and it shows. The rooms are modern and well decorated. Considering the remote location, I was shocked to enjoy such a great selection of wine. The resort takes the environment into account, so as a guest, you need to be live green by putting your TP in the waste paper basket and turning off the AC/lights when you leave your room. If you’re the hoity-toity type that can’t leave her Valentino’s at home, then head for the Virgin Islands. If you would like to see 7 whale sharks, yes seven, and hangout in a casual beachfront bar in a hammock, then head to Utopia. As for the diving, I loved the diversity. We dove caves, sea mounts, pinnacle drop-offs, and snorkeled for whale sharks. It was epic! My favorite dive was the Black Hills. We liked it so much we dove it twice. The dive sites right in front of the resort are great for snorkeling and diving. To top it all off, I had a wonderful massage. The spa room is super cute! As hindsight is always 20-20, here’s what I would have done different. I would not have gone to town. It’s dirty, noisy, and there is nothing really to see. Plus after being in the serene setting of Utopia, it’s a bit of a culture shock. For the ladies, bring bug spray that smells good. We brought bug spray, but it smelled like bad medicine so I didn’t put it on as often as I should have. When the wind subsided on our last two days, the sand flies had a party on my legs. I should have brought 2 pairs of long pants for dinner to keep the sand flies at bay. We traveled to Utopia for our honeymoon this last August 2008. I definitely plan on returning to Utopia. We made new friends and enjoyed an amazing honeymoon!

Our group of 12 consisted of mostly couples, and a few singles, all experienced divers and travelers. We stayed a week at this all inclusive eco resort. It was an adventure, a learning experience, and a vacation we will never forget! 1. FOOD. I cannot say enough about the delicious food - Chef Hugh is a genius and we looked forward to the selection at every meal. We were always full and satisfied and eagerly anticipating his next creation. 2. ROOMS. Nicely decorated, clean, spacious, beds were a little too firm but mostly comfortable, plenty of hot water & towels. Filtered water provided in room. Would have liked a little more water than is provided since you have to use it for teeth brushing too, but easy enough to refill carafe yourself if needed. This is an eco resort so all water is collected and you cant drink the tap water. There are no TV’s, phones, radios and the internet access does not work in the rooms. Not a problem for us - we were there to escape from the world not bring it on vacation with us. 3. STAFF. The owners Kyle and Debbie are on site, friendly and SO helpful and accommodating. Our group of 12 never had to ask more than once for anything. 4. DIVING: The house reef at Utopia is definitely world class. I would not have been sad to dive it every day. Unfortunately the shore conditions can be rough for entry/exit at times so this would not always be convenient (or safe). This also affected the ability to use the ocean side dock to load the boat. The majority of our diving required that we take the jungle trek (about 15 minutes) on the bus to the inner lagoon which is a novelty at first but can become a little tiring day after day. The dive staff does load and unload all dive gear regardless of whether you are docking at the ocean or lagoon and that was a a nice perk. Roberto the boat Captain and Juan Carlos the Divemaster were excellent. They took suggestions on dive sites and made recommendations according to weather and water conditions. Juan Carlos is probably the happiest person I have ever met. I never saw him in a bad mood and no matter what happened he took it all in stride. It can be a little rough out there and several of our group had repeated seasickness issues which was surprising considering none of us were newbies to boat diving. Dramamine was our friend. We spent a little bit of time almost every day searching for the elusive whale shark, got close a few times but were not lucky enough to see one this time. We did get to swim with a pod of wild dolphins and that was amazing. The reef is super healthy and beautiful, although there did seem to be a lack of larger marine life. 5. BUGS. Or should I say **BUGS**! Our entire group spent the entire trip doused in DEET. A couple of us are the type that are a bug buffet and even strong repeated concentrations of DEET did not stop us from suffering the wrath of sand fleas. This was one thing that I did not like at all. I constantly felt greasy from bug spray and I spent less time socializing out in the common areas than I normally would since I just wanted to retreat to my bug free room and wash off the bug spray. It was also one of the things that made the jungle trek more tiring each day as you make that trip in the open air with the mosquitoes. It took a week after getting home before I stopped needing Benadryl for the itching so I could sleep at night. I recommend (and the resort does too) taking light fabrics in long sleeve tops and long pants for dusk, I wish I had! 6. INTERNET. Do not expect to do business, update your blog, or keep in touch with your kids/family using the internet unless you are a patient person. The signal was only good outside the rooms (did I mention the bugs) and even then was quite slow. I know this affected some in our group that were trying to do those things. It was a minor annoyance to us only because it was advertised that wireless internet was available. They did offer the use of the office computer but that room does not have a/c so it was not a viable option for those trying to work or Skype to their kids. 7. TRAVEL. It is a long day getting to and from Utopia Village from the USA. We left Texas in the morning and did not arrive until dusk after 8 separate forms of transportation. Repeat on the way back. It was an adventure for sure with planes, trains, automobiles, boats and jungle bus. I cannot really complain about this as Utila is out of the way and off the beaten path and that is exactly what we were looking for. My main suggestion to the resort is PLEASE do not drop your guests off at the airport so early for departure! We had to wait in the airport for HOURS (4) and this is a tiny place with minimal seating so I'm talking about sitting on the floor with your luggage piled around you because the airline wont let you check baggage that early. Some in our group were ill and actually slept on the floor of the airport! The main town of Roatan is not close to the airport so all 12 of us would have had to take Taxis (with our luggage) to leave the airport. It was not a nice ending to our vacation. Add on that our flight was delayed which meant an extra hour in the airport on top of the already interminable wait and we had some tired grumpy people! All in all this is a beautiful resort, with fantastic people and wonderful diving. They have some issues to iron out before I would give 5 stars but I would not hesitate to return for a another week of diving and feasting at Utopia Dive Village.

Utopia is a real find! We live in Toronto and stumbled upon it online and we're so glad we booked! The diving is fantastic and the dive staff is very reassuring, qualified, enthusiastic and FUN (especially GINA)! Beautiful and spacious dive boat. Besides the diving, the food is INCREDIBLE. Hugh (the chef) is top notch and his dishes were unique (but not outrageous) and delicious! Ask about his 4 spices...simple, yet fantastic! The hotel is beautiful and the staff is so friendly. We hope to visit again.

Getting There: Getting from the U.S. to Utila was not difficult at all. We flew Delta to Roatan and then Utopia arranged a private charter flight from Roatan to Utila. The private charter was not expensive (comparable to flights we’ve taken from Grand Cayman to Little Cayman) and this flight only took 15 minutes. We left New York in the morning and arrived at Utopia before 3pm with all of our luggage! Rooms and Hotel: On our first evening there, one of the other couples at dinner commented that this was the first time they’d traveled where the actual hotel room looked exactly as the pictures online. As a matter of fact, the whole place looked even better than the pictures. The rooms were decorated beautifully with many handmade and interesting pieces and the design and layout of the resort seemed well thought out. Two of the owners were on-sight (Debbie and Roxanne) and went out of their way to accommodate us in every way. Several of us guests commented that it was so comfortable and accommodating, we felt like we were hanging out and staying with good friends. Diving and Dive Op: We have traveled throughout the Caribbean and thought that Utila stood out from the rest. The reefs are healthy and full of life with no signs of damage. There is a good mix of shallow and deep diving and we also enjoyed the wreck dive on the Halliburton. One of the dive sites that really stood out was Black Hills, a sea mound off the coast of the island, with hundreds of schooling fish (including Atlantic Spade Fish), fun-to-watch cleaning stations, and small reef creatures. It is a dive we are still talking about! We absolutely loved the divemasters and boat crew. They were friendly and safe, gave excellent dive briefings, and let us dive as long as our computers and air supply allowed – typically 60 minutes! We laughed at some of the other cattle boats and one day even saw a boat half the size of ours carrying over twenty six people. That night at dinner we all kept commenting on how lucky we felt about our spacious dive boat experience. We were lucky enough to swim with four whale sharks and our boat captain, Leonard, was the only captain to find them the whole time we were there! One of the other standout experiences for all of us was a night shore dive in front of the resort where we were lucky enough to experience the rare String of Pearls, from an underwater creature emitting tiny strings of light –everywhere you look. You’ll have to look it up or see it for yourself to understand what an amazing thing it was for all of us – and not just the phosphorescence you experience during any other night dive! Final comments: The food was good and was served around our dive schedule. Our meals were relaxed, cooked to order and didn’t involve standing in any buffet lines! There were sand flies but we found that a layer of baby oil on the skin was fantastic (thanks to the staff’s recommendation). I sat outside reading in the sun with no problems. We also brought some Ultrathon Insect repellent with us that worked well and had a better smell than other repellents. You can stay in touch via internet and we were able to get online using my husband’s iPhone but I wouldn’t plan on trying to do tons of online work because the online speed varied. Besides, it was a great feeling for both of us to get away from our laptops! The entire trip was the most relaxing I’ve ever been on. If you are looking for a place to get away from the fast pace of life, where you’ll experience far-above-average diving and exceptional, personal service, then Utopia Village really is your utopia! (Ok – now that I wrote that, it sounds like some infomercial tag line but it really sums up our experience!)

If "life is a box of chocolates", then Utopia Village is a gourmet bon-bon. We had heard great things about this resort & they were all true. Arriving in a 3rd world location can be a little unsettling, but this place is a class act from beginning to end! You get there by "planes, trains & automobiles." Don't be concerned; it's just part of the adventure. Julio, the puddle-jumper pilot, was so friendly. He moved us through security in Roatan like the mover-and-shaker he is! We were in the air to Utila in no-time at all. Fast forward to the resort. We were met by the OWNERS... can you believe that. The pride and care that they took to make us comfortable, acquaint us to the property & discover our needs/ wants/ desires.... this had all the makings of pampering with a capital P, They didn't disappoint. The entire week was filled with experiences, side-trips, cordial contacts & facilities that were far superior to the normal island resort. Everything is new here, they just recently completed construction. The resort wasn't full, so we owned the place for our 7-day respite. The beach is classic caribbean. The rooms have a decor that oozes simple sophistication with glass block, vessel-sinks & local hardwood everywhere. The food is outstanding... the best food we have experienced at a dive resort. This was quite an accomplishment, since 1/3 of the guests had vegetarian convictions. To exceed the expectations of both kinds of consumers is high praise. Best dishes for me were fresh seafood, chicken & breakfast fratatas. Quick inserts... my swedish massage at the spa was very good. Although not my forte, the outdoor bar was a center of activity for many. I heard no complaints here. Now, the diving. The boat is great, the captain enjoyable (except his tobacco habit), & the divemasters were delightful. The dive staff makes the week & they were great assets to the reputation of Utopia Village. You live with these guys all week & they become family. A downside to the experience was the mediocre amounts of fish we saw. It seems that much of the sea life had left Utila the week we visited. Yes, there was great variety, but not nearly as many numbers as, say, Roatan. Shore diving would be easier if one didn't have to traverse slippery coralheads through the breakers. I suggest you jump from the dock & return to the dock ladder in rough conditions. This worked well for me. Do be prepared for the sand flies. Know that this is a largely unimproved island & a remote location on that island. Internet is inconsistent. Wind conditions affect dive locations & shore-diving opportunities (duh!). The staff pours their sweat & blood into every room, meal, side-trip & even the decor. They aren't just staff, they own the place & this is their dream! Armed with full-understanding of these truths, surely you will agree a stay at such a location will be paradise!

As someone used to tough adventure holidays in the Amazon river Peru.this was certainly different for me .two weeks of bliss,wonderful people,location,the food was excellent i came away 3 pounds over weight,smiles.would i go back ? yes in a heart beat.a time for me of deep reflection,and to count my blessings.

ive been lucky enough to stay in cool places from belize to reykjavik to berlin from dive resorts to actual dives from funky to five-star and i gotta say this place is pretty perfect the right amount of 5star elegance with a mix of austin, texas casual cool they manage to take care of while leaving you alone to just the right degree the people were great, the place is spectacular so please don't go there as i prefer to keep it for myself on return visits.

Utopia is a wonderful place for folks who want to get away from the trappings of overcrowded resorts. The staff is extremely solicitous of your every need and you get all the conveniences of home without the distractions. Diving - the house reef is probably the best I've seen (been diving for about 20 yrs/hundreds of dives; many locations throughout the Carribean and Pacific). Our boat captain dropped us right over 3 whate sharks, the last of which was close enough to touch - a big no-no - but nice to be that close just the same. Food - Two choices for lunch and dinner - fresh fish usually is an option - with enough choice to make everyone happy. Cocktails aren't included in the price, but they're very reasonable just the same. Communications - Skype is available for 10 cents per minute, and there's wireless internet for those who bring laptops. Staff - Again, very solicitious; probably the best part of the experience. I wanted to get a quick workout while I was here. The staff arranged for a quick 4-wheeler ride to a nearby dock and a boat ride to a nearby Cay - 30 minute trip. The gym was by no means a full-up health club, but the staff's willingness to go the extra distance was much appreciated. Overall - a definite two thumbs-up -- particularly for divers.

My husband and I began our Honduras adventure at Utopia. We have traveled frequently and stayed in some wonderful resorts, but Utopia is by far at the top of our favorite list. Getting to this beautiful island was half the fun. We traveled on 3 planes, a van , a boat and yes a truck to get to this pot of gold at the end of our journey. Utopia is definitely a class act. It's owned and was build by a group of long time female friends. The resort DOES live up to it's name. You are in paradise and immediately feel like part of the family. 3 of the owners live at the resort and are always available to make sure everything is just right.. The resort is tastefully decorated with attention to every detail, right down to the hand painted bathroom sink. Like all the other reviews I have to comment on the food. The chef Hugh is extraordinary. Every meal was 5 star with a bon appetit presentation. The island is beautiful and Utopias location is perfect. It's isolated enough so that you feel your the only ones on the island, but still are able to explore it's beauty and adventures. We fished, snorkled, swam, explored and kayaked. Our favorite adventure was a 2 hour kayak trip through a mangrove channel to a an isolated harbor with a pristine white sandy beach that we had all to ourselves. If you want to treat yourself to paradise in a beautiful setting, 5 star lodging and food with very special people you need to visit Utopia. The resort is one of the best laid out locations i have visited in the Bay Islands. Truly the most comfortable bed in the Caribbean. I have been to the Bay Islands dozens of times and this was the most I have been. Food and staff excellent and dependable finsing whale sharks to snorkel with. As with most of the Bay Islands with a beach; the no see ums were fierce when there was no wind. That was baout the only negative I found.

The trip started out bad when I lost a fin on my first dive but the dive master came up with a spare and off we went. Gina and Juan Carlos were excellent dive masters as well as teachers. I felt that I had one-on-one instruction to help overcome bouyancy problems. At the beginning of the week I could only stay down for 30 min., by the end of the week it was 1 hour. Thanks guys for making it a great trip. The boat was the Miss U, captained by Leonard. He was great at finding Whale Sharks migrating through the area. This really made the trip exciting. The rooms at Utopia Village were comfortable, clean and roomy. The food was prepared by a knowledgeable chef and was spicy and delicious. I can't say enough about the massage. One hour never went by so fast.

This resort is very well named. Once there, you will be treated to relaxation and excitement, camaraderie and time to reflect. Of course, getting to and from Utopia can be a bit trying, but nothing good comes easy. Expect a challenging journey, comfortable accommodations, enthusiastic and talented dive masters and boat captain, great food, and to make friends. The staff will try hard to make you welcome from the moment you arrive. Gina and Juan Carlos are excellent divemasters; their enthusiasm is evident and contagious. They are attentive and safety conscious, and exhibit great respect for the environment. Thanks to both of you for your assistance and talent in finding and pointing out the many creatures of the local reefs! The diving is great with many wonderful dive sites to choose from depending on the conditions, and surface intervals spent either finding the elusive whale sharks or dolphins to snorkel with or at a laid-back fishing village on one of the Cays. Captain Leonard lived up to his great reputastion for locating the whale sharks, and Gina's excited prompting of the guests to "get ready, quick - it will be on the port side - it's coming, now Go! Go! Go!" will not soon be forgotten. The bioluminescence seen during our night dives was enchanting, particularly the rhythmic light pulsations of the "string-of-pearls" comb jellies located for us to observe by Gina. Chef Hugh's cooking, often praised in reviews here, lives up to or exceeds all expectations. The rooms are well appointed and large, with many hand made details and great overall design. Your room provides a truly comfortable home base for an exciting stay. The entire resort is spotlessly clean and well maintained - no small compliment in such a remote location. My daughter loved her spa treatments, and was inspired by the diving. She was able to keep in touch using the wireless connection available at the resort. The staff was happy to arrange a trip to town for us and others and to arrange a variety of excursions from kayaking to zip-lining on the mainland for other guests during our stay. Yes, there are sand flies - this is the Bay Islands and you must expect (and if wise, prepare for) them. An onshore breeze is common and provides relief. While annoying, they did not prevent anyone from enjoying their time in Utopia. A dive club will find this resort ideal for any group; traveling alone with my daughter we found ourselves uniting with the other guests traveling as singles or couples starting from the first night. By the time we left we knew everyone there, guests and staff alike, as friends. We shared meals, SCUBA diving adventures, and conversation at the Dive Bar daily. Ask Juan Carlos to sing one evening and you will be pleasantly surprised (as long as he does not break another guitar string). Even after leaving we are still sharing our memories and photographs with the new friends we have made. When was the last time you went to a resort and, upon returning home, immediately contacted other guests and staff to exchange comments and photos?

If you are looking for someplace to party, with wild 20-somethings, stay in Utila Town, not Utopia. Utopia is truly an experience for the dedicated diver who also wants the better things in life, like upscale rooms, gourmet cooking and a staff willing to insure your vacation is truly all you dreamt it would be. When booking, you are working with the owners, not just agents. When I finally met Kyle, I felt like I found a long lost friend. We just returned from two amazing weeks at Utopia. Not only was the dive staff exceptional (thank you Gina & Juan Carlos), but the food was AMAZING! I would return again just for Chef Hugh’s seared black fin tuna, not to mention his BROWNIES! (can you please send me a package?) Ryan the bartender makes the best margaritas I have ever had, fresh limes, home made simple syrup, YUM! Yes, diving is the main reason to visit Utopia, but for the day before your flight out, I would STRONGLY encourage you to get ALL of the guests together to spend the day at Water Cay. Water Cay is a beautiful little island with sandy white beaches, snorkeling, and swimming pool like water. There is a small fee to go, but if you can get all of the guests to go, Utopia will have Chef Hugh & the bartender, Ryan join the group. Hugh will build a fire and BBQ you a wonderful lunch, while Ryan keeps you supplied in beer, margaritas, or whatever you ask her to bring along. You will get home in time for a shower and dinner and then….. Ask Juan Carlos to play his guitar and sing for you! Eric Clapton, you have some competition!!

The minute we got to Utopia Dive Village, my husband and I felt welcome. All the staff were so warm & friendly that we felt as if we were staying at the home of friends. The food was excellent, and our room was beautiful. My husband loved the diving, and did 3 dives a day. We definitely plan to go back, probably in March so we can maybe see a whale shark.

I loved Utopia. I spent a week at the end of May and it was, by far, the best dive resort I've visited. I tend to like laid-back non-tourist-y type resorts and Utopia totally fit the bill. I was a solo traveler and the owners and staff were very friendly and welcoming. The dive staff was exceptional (thank you Juan Carlos). The diving was amazing. Juan Carlos and the boat captain, Leonard, went above and beyond to find a whale shark. And the whale shark - WOW! The food was 4-star restaurant quality and the accommodations were definitely upscale. All in all, Utopia is a great place for a dive-eat-relax vacation. I can't wait to go back!

Imagine living in your beach screensaver for a week. That is what being at Utopia was like. Fabulous white sand. Turquoise water. Incredible dives. The resort is really well designed with an island elegance. The dive masters were enthusiastic and fun. And the chef was GREAT. I had four nieces and nephews with me ranging in ages from 14 to 21. They had an amazing week. I would recommend the resort..highly recommend. The only heads up revolve around getting there. It takes a little bit but the staff at Utopia will help with arrangements. And of course the sand flies. Bring LOTS of repellant.

Utopia Lodge is excellent. It provides a unique combination of seclusion, small group diving, high end accommodations, and excellent food. It is not in town (you take a boat to get to the lodge), so if you’re interested in a wild night life, this is not for you (unless you bring your own group, in which case you could certainly create your own at their bar). However, if you would like to be someplace that is quiet, relatively secluded, and provides excellent Caribbean diving for all levels of experience, it is. The lodge is beautiful, the staff is friendly and accommodating, and the dive sites are relatively close (5 to 20 minutes), variable (each dive was unique) and abundant (we never hit the same site twice). Plus they have an absolutely beautiful section of reef at the resort that provides for great shore dives. D.M.s Antonio and Oscar were filling in for some dive staff who were on vacation. They were very energetic, enthusiastic and friendly. They took great care of us and our equipment. Boat captain Leonard went out of his way to find dolphins (we swam with wild dolphins twice – they were incredible!) and whale sharks (didn’t find these, but it was late in the season, so we weren’t surprised). We have done 270+ dives in the Caribbean, and this was as good a dive team/experience as we have ever had. The chef while we were there was John. He is new (it was his first week) to Utopia and he is superb. The food was consistently marvelous, as were the desserts. He really works hard to make sure the meals are delicious and unique (nothing remotely close to the standard meals found throughout the Caribbean – and we’ve been to many resorts). The only two downs (as you will read in other reviews) are the sand fleas and the local air travel. But the fleas can be controlled with DEET (we used a 35% cream that worked fine) and the air travel wasn’t really different from any other puddle jumper experiences we have had. Neither would prevent us from going back again. We will return to Utopia and recommend it to all. It was wonderful!

Utopia Village is the perfect place for a relaxing retreat and dive experience. Everything was wonderful; from the staff to the accommodations to the dives. The staff goes out of their way to make sure that the guests are comfortable and all of their needs are being met. Chef John made sure that all of our meals were outstanding. The resort is beautiful, clean and thoughtfuly designed. It was our first time diving and the DM's were very helpful and knowledgeable. The reefs were incredible and we thoroughly enjoyed all the dive sites. There is something very special at Utopia - something difficult to articulate... the closest we can come is to say that the logistics of managing our vacation logistics (travel to and from the resort, daily dives, PADI certifications, trips to town, etc...) were completely invisible and seamless. The staff at Utopia anticipated our every need and were prepared, in advance, as if they were old friends. It has been rare in our travels, that we have seen this kind of hospitality, even at those places which promote thier own accolades to that effect. As a result of Utopia's thoughtful and friendly atmosphere we were able to enjoy our vacation in a way we couldn't have imagined. Our standard/expectation of 'hospitality' has been completely redefined.

We spent New Years Holiday at Utopia in hopes to get away from it all (TV, phone, etc), do some diving, and rejuvenate. The staff delivered. The accommodations were rustic but elegant and the staff was outstanding: highly attentive and very energetic. One of our dogs required life-saving emergency surgery while we were traveling. The staff let us use the computer, phones, etc to help manage through it. We were able to have downtime when we wanted it and socialize (in the games room, cabana bar, movie room, etc) at other times. Based on what we saw, the Lodge has the finest accommodations on the island. The staff was so terrific, we found that we wanted to spend more and more time hanging out with them over the course of the week. The diving was good for us as we were at different experience levels and the divemasters' were very supportive. My husband even decided to get his advanced open water during the trip. We took a few side trips after some of the dives into town or to the local keys. It was a fun way to check out the local flavor for a bit and then retreat to our retreat. We enjoyed snorkeling and beach dives right at the reef at the Lodge as well. The chef was terrific, making the most of the local fruits and veggies and keeping it interesting. The staff threw a very fun New Years Eve get together. A different evening, we all took the launch and went into town to eat at a great local restaurant. The no see-ums caused the only frustrations for us. The staff has baby oil (which they prefer- and they should know) and that you can buy. Bring bug juice, baby oil, socks and long pants/shirts just to play it safe. Remember you are in a Caribbean tropical retreat and that's the way it goes. Enjoy!
