Friendly staff, but budget room was just that! No view, and in need of some attention. Cambridge later at night is also quite a challenge and not the safest of places.

Brilliant Room in the End!I arrived at 11pm on Sunday night & was taken to a double room on the 1st floor. Very compact is what I'd say & very hot. The towel rail was on & you couldn't switch it off! You could just about walk around the double bed. I opened the window which looked out on to other roofs of the hotel so no view! I went to put on the air conditioning & touched one of the buttons & the whole unit fell off the wall. Rang reception who advised they'd move me but they didn't have another double so I'd have to stay in a single & they'd move me into another double the next day. Fine, this at least had more room to move about! Lay down on the mattress & felt like I was in a £30 B&B! It was extremely uncomfortable & ended up sleeping on the floor! I complained next day & let them know about the mattress. On returning, they said they'd moved my things to the new room on the 2nd floor & would check to make sure all was OK. When I opened the door I was bowled over! It was a huge big suite with a 4-poster double bed, a view looking over Parkers Piece park at the front of the hotel & a huge long bathroom. It was amazing. They also refunded 50% of my first nights' stay & gave me a free meal in the restaurant! They really did say sorry. The reception also rang up to check that I was happy with the room. Having said that, had I not had a problem in the first room, I would have been a bit disappointed with the size of the room - you really couldn't swing a cat in it. They were both clean however. There are also letters in the pack in the room which states they are going to be refurbishing the hotel to bring it up to their deluxe hotel standard - when that will be happening it didn't say. The service was excellent & breakfast was very good.

Hey, we enjoyed our stay here in this well located hotel. Close to everything. Lots of great eats nearby and hotel breakfast was enjoyable.

Terrible hotel, run down and not worth the money. Location is the only benefit.

UNIVERSITY ARM-AND-A-LEG HOTELThis is a tired hotel that needs extensive modernisation. Its one selling point is that it is right in the middle of Cambridge. Even so, for a cramped room with a CRT television, I would expect to pay around £80-£100. We had to pay £240, breakfast not included. Seriously over-priced. Avoid.

Great BreakfastClean and functional room. Very good breakfast in morning with excellent service and overlooking Parkers Piece so be sure to go for bed and breakfast option. Really good fresh patries and croissants and proper hot menu with kippers and things. Mmmm.

Hotel in general was very nice, our room though was tired and in need of some TLC

Rooms over looking the park. There is a path through the park where several groups of peaple passed during the night, who were very merry and vocal in there activaties. I would not recomend a park view room because of this.

To classify this hotel as 4* is highly inappropriate in its current state of disrepair. In its favour, the hotel has character which is very much lacking in many of the 'chain' hotels and some lovely individual features. The bedding was crisp and white and the towels white and fluffy. The cold buffet part of the breakfast was very good, but the cooked breakfast not worth the long wait to be served. The location is very convenient, but noisy, and the views of the green surroundings on the photos are very misleading. We would only return if the hotel underwent a complete refurb, and then only if our preferred hotel in Cambridge was fully booked as it was on this occasion. The reduced room rate of £85 was just about acceptable and we did not pay for one breakfast due to the tardiness and ultimate poor qualiity.

Room ReviewThis was our first time at the hotel stopping there for my wifes birthday and although the room was large and clean, it was very tired with paint chipping and peeling off the door in the bathroom. I have stopped in lots of hotels around the UK and found that the quality was dissapointing for the price. The major plus was centre of town and a great breakfast.

Nice location, charming hotel.A very pleasant hotel with lots of character. Location is excellent for Cambridge center and colleges. About 10 minute walk from station. Not so good a location for driving to. The street outside was very noisy until the early hours (on a Monday night), but that's not the hotel's fault. It would be my first choice of hotel in Cambridge again if travelling by train.

I think that this hotel must have rooms that it offers to full paying customers and then cheaper rooms. The room was ok, but I have stayed in better hotels in the price range that were newer and cleaner. The room was clean but looked a little old and worn. The wardrobe didn't open properly as there was a cupboard in the way. This wasn't a problem for one night, but would have been annoying for longer. The only thing that really felt 4 star was the bed, which was amazingly comfortable!

An ideal location with lovely views over the park and good parking. We got this at a discount. There is no way the room was worth the full price - it was too small and there was a distinct lack of complimentary goodies that you would expect in a hotel of this rating and size. It was handy to other eateries and bars which was a bonus. Ambience was good. The breakfast was excellent and it was good to be able to read the newspapers on offer. Would we go there again? If I was paying that full rate I would probably go somewhere with higher levels of comfort in the accommodation and either gym or spa facilities.

Saturday Night Disco Noise from the street side of the hotelBy booking online and thereby obtaining a discount, I was (unknown to me at the point of booking) allocated on arrival a room facing the street on the first floor of the hotel.Unfortunately a highly audible Disco operates until 4am directly opposite the hotel on the Saturday night I was there which is presumably why booking with an online discount are placed in this less than favourable location within the hotel, which is not made clear to anyone making an advance booking.I assume these rooms are much more difficult to charge the full rate for due to the ongoing sound of drumming going on until 4am, hence they are presumably offered more cheaply to online customers in the first instance? But I am just guessing. You have been warned! Bring your earplugs if you book online!

Take Ear PlugsThe room was comfortable but in need of redecoration (would someone please remove the blu-tack from the wall) and it was overheated. Open windows ensure a noisy night (students seem to be getting louder) so close the windows and turn on the air-con. Breakfast was grand for those who like the 'full English' and not bad for the rest of us too. Parking is very limited (and expensive) and the street elevation of the hotel is an architectural nightmare.

Poor reception especially with direcetion to car park (no space available at the hotel). Breakfast was served luke warm. Standards seem tohave fallen since I last stayed at this hotel.

good location, spacious but shabby rooms, friendly but inexperienced staffThe hotel has a great location in Cambridge town centre and the bedrooms were a good size. The public rooms look like they were last done up in the 1980s and it seems like they are doing up the bedrooms one at a time. We had booked 2 double rooms on your website for £95 a night. The pleasant young man on reception checked in a lady who arrived before us, announcing to all within earshot she had paid £85 a night including breakfast which immediately put us off the place. I gave him our booking form for two double rooms but he assumed myself (a female) and a male colleague were a couple and tried to check us both into the same room. He told us there were lots of empty executive rooms available that night if we paid a further £20; we declined. I have no idea why the hotel rents out the non-refurbished, shabby rooms at the back of the hotel when the refurbished rooms at the front, looking out on a lovely green are left empty. We looked into one of the exec rooms which was being cleaned and it looked great. Unfortunately our employer wouldn't let us spend more than £100 on a room. The rooms we got were large, at least 4m by 4m plus bathroom. There was free ethernet / internet in the bedrooms. The beds were King sized and dressed in really nice, new crisp plain white cotton bedding with duvets. The rest of the bedrooms looked like they were decorated in the 80s. There was wallpaper hanging off the ceiling in one room. One of our bathrooms was new and pretty nice, the other had an old bathroom with a broken shower. When we complained we ended up being charged £80 per room per night which was still a bit expensive for a shabby room and no breakfast. In summary, this place could be really nice. I've no idea why they let out the non-refurbished rooms at a high price when they are half-empty. If you could get a fully refurbished room with views of the green at a good price, go for it. Otherwise I'm sur
