Stuffy and stinky room, no aircon. Really uncomfortable bad. A plus - in the center.

Stayed 2 times at this hotel; once in Oct 2006, again this April. Just a small, budget room but everything worked, staff kept the place clean. Building is somewhat old and shows its age (what a shame, it has classic features), window is a bit sticky but the place was fine. The staff is courteous and remembers you when you come back.

the front deskthe people at the front desk are not very helpful, one in particular was just plain bad. Location is very good.

I enjoyed my stay at the Union Square Plaza Hotel. Staff were very friendly and helpful, and the room comfy and cozy. Clearly an older hotel, but it has been nicely refurbished, and is kept surprisingly, impeccably clean. The area it's in is rather crowded and noisy, but I knew that going in. It's also a very vital area, with LOTS going on: good restaurants, clubs, theaters, Union Square, etc. Very much in the heart of things. Only drawback results from an unfortunate combination: no air conditioning, and no screens on the windows. Usually, the weather is mild enough that the lack of air conditioning is not a problem. But, without it, you do need to bring some fresh air into the room from time to time. The only way to do that is to open a window, which has two semi-bothersome drawbacks: 1) it lets in the city noise; and 2) the lack of screens could allow flies into the room. I remedied the latter by only opening the window a few inches.

The location was extremely convenient. It was extremely noisy. The location was nice, since it was a block away from the Nike Marathon starting point, is right in Union Square and has a Starbucks next door (expected in SF). However, the room was dingy and I barely got any sleep due to the noise wafting in from outside. It was too stuffy without the windows open, so there really wasn't any way to win.

This is a great place to stay for people who are rarely going to be in the actual hotel room - except to sleep obviously. Water is hot and the beds were made and general cleanliness is good, beyond that I was never in the room. There are no ammenities to this Hotel so everything you might want or need you will have to go out for. If you plan to be out everyday doing the tourist thing then it is great. The rates are low and it has the basics. Staff are very helpful. If you are HEAVILY opposed to people begging for money you will need to spend a great deal more for your hotel. Begging is just par for the course in that area but if you plan on shopping you will no doubt encounter it anyway. People who can adapt will just learn to tune it out. The location is fantastic - there might be other hotels in the area that are better for the same price but I couldn't find them.

Excellent value for such a convenient location for central SF. Seemed very quiet for a city centre hotel, and room was good-sized and comfortable.

Obviously an older building, but the room was fine & clean. Fine for kids, though maybe not very young ones-unusual slightly warm weather so we needed to open windows-no window screens. In typical cool weather with windows kept closed, this wouldn't be a problem Seemed to be in bustling area of the city, close to cable cars $ Chinatown. Enjoyed staying in this area more than I would have at a total tourist area such as the Wharf.Interestingly, able to hear live Blues music from nearby club while bathing. Staff very helpful; the same young woman the entire 2 days we were there. Paid parking at a separate facility about a block away, but you can unload your luggage right in front and staff watched our things at the desk without a problem, understand that parking in SF is typically difficult.

The room was comfortable and met my needs. No AC and the elevator didn't work one day. Hallways were a bit shabby, the room was clean and comfortable. Without AC I kept the windows open which brought in a lot of noise, so I used ear plugs. Staff were friendly and helpful. They provided good information about transportation in the area. I felt that the hotel was safe.

Hotel was ideally situated to enable us to get around San Francisco - very central and close to Union Square and the cable car lines. The room also had everything we needed, although a bit basic it was all we expected for the money. However our room was facing onto Geary Street, which is an extremely busy street in terms of both people and traffic. The windows were paper thin and therefore the noise at night became unbearable (mainly due to vehicle traffic and drunks). We asked to move into a corridor room not facing the street but the receptionist was less than helpful and said this couldn't be done. We therefore spent our last night at a Hotel around the corner which was fantastic. So if you are looking for a budget hotel and don't mind sleepless nights stay at the Union Square Plaza.

Convenient location. I do not like the sink located outside the bathroom. Because of its convenient location, it is good to stay in this hotel for a day or two.

Very poor customer service. Fire alarm ripped off the wall, noisy pipes running through our room, no remote for T.V. When we complained about fire alarm he told us not to smoke in room - very indifferent attitude. We stayed in 6 hotels in America and this was by far the worst and the only one we complained about.

Despite its minimalism, it did appear to be fairly clean. No A/C, smelled like bowling alley. I was in the city for overnight business. I selected this hotel because it was relatively affordable and in the area of the city I needed to be in. At first glance, this hotel is not without its aesthetic charm. The walls are painted a cool, welcoming color and are studded with old woodwork. Unfortunately the musty-greasy smell that pervades the structure reminded me of a bowling alley and made me want to wash my hands continuously. When I arrived, I was assisted at the front desk by a seemingly catatonic young man. He processed my check-in without making eye contact and responded to my questions with barely audible Spangles grunts. I was handed a bulky plastic keychain with my room's number and key on it. I rode the elevator up to my room, set my bags down and realized that the door did not shut behind me. Several subsequent attempts to get the door to latch also failed. I eventually had to put my whole weight into the door to get it to latch. Ironic that I had to nearly break down the door to get it to shut. The room, while austere and stuffy, did appear to be clean. (I left my blacklight and white gloves at home, thankfully.) The bed was rather uncomfortable, but it was suitable for channel surfing through basic cable. After considerable effort, I was able to fall asleep and slept well-excepting when I was jolted out of bed by a clamorous debate between two aging women about which one of them was more of a trollip than the other. All in all-I would advise avoiding this place in summer if you are at all temperature sensitive. I would also advise against this place unless you have the bare-minimalist expectations. It would be an ideal place for frat boys to pass out after a hard night on the town, but for others the hotel lacks many of the basic attributes one comes to.

This hotel is very centrally placed but as a result is bound to be noisy. It is also very tired in terms of decor and fittings, but provides a good basic accomodation. For some reason the hotel charged my credit card for the first night, a month ahead of my arrival although had no record of doing so (I was able to provide my card statement). The hotel resolved this speedily and with good grace but I was left wondering what would have happened if I hadn't had that proof....
