Convenient Union Square location. Room was very small. Location to Union Square was just what I needed for access to the Chinese New Year's Parade. The room was clean but very small - so was fine for sleeping, but not for lounging or enjoying the room otherwise.

Nicely fitted out overall, and generally welcoming. Location can't be faulted, and my choice of a darker room at the back of the hotel assured a good night's sleep. Room was surprisingly small, and no bath - but otherwise well appointed, including an iPod docking alarm clock - nice touch. Enjoyed the complimentary evening wine tasting, and talking with other guests and the friendly Japanese intern serving the drinks. The sink was virtually impossible to use (small and the faucet protruded so I was unable to have a wash!) but besides this, all in all a very pleasant stay.

This hotel is perfectly placed for tourists! It is 1 block from the end of the trolley and the BART. The cable car is 1 1/2 blocks away and took us directly to the piers. It also has nice stores around it and seems like a safe area. The room (double) was a little small but the beds were the most comfortable I've slept in - in a hotel! The bathroom was a nice size and nicely remodeled. Our room had AC and it kept the street noise down at night. I would definitely stay here again if going back to SF!

This hotel was not only a great location but it is clean, stylish, and modern!! The staff was wonderfully friendly and helpful in every way!! Upon arrival I did ask for a quiet room because I heard that there are rooms that can be very noisy in this hotel due to the location and the hustle and bustle of Powell Street and the cable cars. The staff accomodated me and even asked if I wanted to see a couple of rooms. I just said as long as it is quiet, and it was. My boyfriend and I enjoyed staying here immensely and would come back again in a heartbeat if we do return to San francisco in the near future!!!!

Recently renovated very clean stylish hotel in a very old building. Rooms are small with small bathrooms. No AC and the window opened only about 10" so the room was stuffy. Modernized (iPod player, flatscreen, wifi) but still could use minor adjustments . Staff was kind, And location was great.

Great location, clean, and looks good. No counter space in bathroom! I really liked the hotel, but not having any counter space in the bathroom created problems with shaving, and regular clean up. Otherwise, it was a nice hotel.

First of all... hotel staff were wonderful, truly! But less than knowlagable about their hotel. I booked the hotel primarily based on location and most importantly, decor. I even called prior to booking to make sure the room I was booking was what I wanted. I get there to find... The hotel has been remodeled. there is no mention of the completed remodel on the website... no mention when I called... no mention as I was checking in. I feel less than decieved... but I do feel mislead... I feel lied to.

The Hotel Union Square is a great value for a boutique style hotel. Cable cars are right outside the door, and there are plenty of dining and shopping opportunities. When we first arrived, we had a small third floor room overlooking Powell Street. Good for people watching, bad for noise. This room also had a terrible odor. Luckily, the staff quickly responded to our request to change rooms and, as requested, moved us to a higher floor, having us inspect the room for approval. This room was quiet, huge and very clean. All of the rooms have high ceilings, boutique style linens and free standing clothing racks. The complimentary wine and hot cider in the afternoon is a nice touch. We were traveling with a younger child and a twenty year old. Our youngest would have preferred a hotel with a swiming pool, but for the price and location, we decided to forgo this and spent time at the many local beaches. Our older son appreciated the convenience of public transportation and the unique style of the hotel. Pluses: location, price, desk staff, style. Not so good: front rooms can be noisy, parking expensive, excessive panhandling in neighborhood if this bothers you. We would stay there again.

Went to enjoy the city. The hotel was in a good location but not clean and extremely small. I would not stay in this hotel again. There are much better hotels in the area that have better service and nicer rooms

The location of this hotel is the best!!! You are right in the middle of everything as soon as you step out of the hotel. The staff was very nice and very helpful. I would, however, suggest upgrading to the King Suite, instead of the typical queen room. The size is much bigger and alot more comfortable. The bed was the most comfortable bed we have slept in, we tried to find out what type it was so we can get one at home!!!! Our experience was awsome and we will be staying again at this hotel on our next visit. The atmosphere is great and the rooms are very quiet and the curtains make the room very dark if you want them to be, in order to sleep in. We were on the street and the noise was not an issue for us whatsoever. This is a great find for us as we plan on making several weekend trips a year to the city!!!!

Hotel Union Square is a total bargain. It's two blocks from the BART station, and close to other public transportation (trolleys and taxis are abundant). While the location at first seems noisy and full of tourists, once you step inside the hotel, the bustling outside the door is easy to forget. The hotel was clean, (though slightly worn). The room and bathroom felt huge compared with other hotels we visited on our trip; the ceilings were high and the room design was very practical, with an free-standing closet and shoe rack. There were nice amenities, like the wine reception in the evening, and the free welcome kit, bottled water, and coffee we found in our room. The staff was very gracious, but not intrusive. We choose the courtyard side, forgoing a view for a quieter night's sleep, as we are all light sleepers and the hotel is on a commercial street. I did not hear any noise at all during the night. While there is no air conditioning in the hotel, they offer ceiling fans and box fans upon request. (You can also open the windows, but I felt a little unsafe leaving the windows open as there were no screens on them.) Overall, it was a great experience and I would definitely stay there again.

the hotel is on the cable car line in the heart of union square. fun, city vibe. very clean rooms and comfy beds. hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. yes, rooms are kinda' small but standard for a room in the center of a major city like s.f. nice toiletries, flat screen tv, etc. would definitely stay here again.

We spent 4 days in this hotel and were very happy about location, room, staff and value for money. The Hotel is very close to all public trasportation and it is just in the living centre of San Francisco.

Very clean and the staff was friendly. room was really nice and very clean. smaller than whats pictured but it gets the job done. beds are really comfy and it has vaulted ceilings so the room feels larger and a big flat screen tv. the bathroom is large and very nice. right in the middle of everything at union square so you can walk anywhere around there. would stay again there if i visited.

While our room in the revamped Hotel Union Square was noticeably "efficient," the bathroom and its amenities were fine. The location of this nicely modernized, truly boutique place to stay in the heart of it all certainly helps to overcome any limitations their lowest-priced rooms impose on the comfort of any hang-out factor. The staff is thoroughly accomodating, and the available parking most convenient. A fine place to spend the night, but you will want to be out on the town most of the time.

The staff is great. Very friendly and very helpful. For San Francisco, this is very basic and more of a budget hotel. The hallways and at least our room really needed painting. (The hallways smelled funny). The sheets were inexpensive and our blanket had a number of holes in it. Do not stay on the side facing Powell as it is very loud with the cable cars, individuals out and about until all hours,, etc. While the staff is great, we wouldn't stay again. A year ago, we staed at Hotel Rex--we wished we had spent the extra money to stay there again. Try to stay near Bush or Sutter in Union Square--it's far more quiet and there are the panhandlers.

The hotel itself was great...however, the noise levels at night were extremely unbearable--loud sirens, cable car, screaming pedestrians, blaring music, etc...the hotel ought to sound proof their windows it was that loud. I travel a lot for business so I can tolerate some noise, but this was just over the top. The location was great as it was close to shopping and restaurants however there was a extremely high level of homeless people wandering around the area.
