We stayed for one night before heading to Kalani Retreat Center. The room was cozy and the continental breakfast was good. It was a nice place to spend our first night in Hawaii.

The view was great! Ants and roaches. No parking. Nice older hotel. Great view of the bay. The loud birds can either be irritating or soothing depending on your view. The room was large, but there were tiny ants everywhere in the bathroom.

Cosy, familiar hotel with atmosphere. Good Restaurant. Nice flowers everywhere, big room, good car parking facility, near to the airport

I reserved the partial oceanview thinking that I would be able to get a decent room with a queen bed and be able to see the ocean from some part of the room. Wow, I was wrong! They gave me a room that WOULD have had a view of the ocean IF they chopped down the trees! Plus, the room had two full beds...a real romance killer. I went back to the desk to see if I could get a room with a queen or king bed, but they were all sold out, even though I checked in early! I paid an extra 15 to upgrade to an oceanview with a king bed and it was well worth it. The view was great! The condition of the hotel was pretty sad, however. The room was old and really damp. If I could have found something a little newer for the price, I would have left in a heartbeat. If you're on a budget and aren't too picky, go ahead and stay here, but get the full oceanview room.

Wanted two beds. Got one bed and a sleeper sofa which was springs with a sheet on it. I had to beg for a different room and then they tried to put us in a smoking room. Finally got a room with two beds with no smoke smell. Then everything was pretty good.

My room was clean, spacious w/ "funky" 1960's decor - BEAUTIFUL view - everything I needed and expected. Bathroom was clean - but needed minor repairs to tile and counter top. The room was excellent: quiet, with comfortable bed and outstanding service. It's not the Ritz - but if you are looking for the relaxed, easy-going Big Island hotel on Hilo bay. The family atmosphere is wonderful - the staff made me feel really welcome and, as a woman traveling alone, very safe. It was an easy place to kick back and enjoy Hawaii.

I would stay there again, but only because there are very few options in Hilo. Just beware: the rooms are nothing like the photos you see. The facilities our outdated and not spotless.

The hotel is old and in disrepair, but comfortable enough. My visit there was not a bad experience, but I don't know that I would recommend it to any one else. The staff expected the guests to leave early and return late. They were a little rude when I tried napping every afternoon and they wanted three or four hours to wander in and out while they cleaned.

Good location. Parking. We planned on staying several more days, but didn't as parking was very difficult, the breakfast consisted of no cereals, ran out of fruit and the main dining area closed for breakfast. Coffee in room, but no sugar or creamer.

Stayed for one night before travelling to Maui. Not bad for the price but, it certianly will not exceed your expectations. Definately and older hotel but, you can tell that the staff/management does what it can to keep it as well kept as possible. Parking is terrible as we had to park down the street. Kind of a quirky type of place and would only recommend it for a night or two while visiting the attractions around Hilo. Its OK but if OK is not what you expect while staying in Hawaii then go elsewhere.

We enjoyed our night's stay at the hotel. We were interest in a clean place to sleep primarily. The location fit in perfectly with our desires. We liked the ambience of an old time hotel immensely.

Nice location looks. Lack of parking, bar patrons noisy. First time we came to see room with friends it was smelly 2nd floor room. Our room was better hotel could use newer furniture.

The hotel is pretty cheap, considering the going rates. We paid about 85 per night. I had read some of the bad reviews but i couldn't find any other rooms and I decided to have an open mind, plus we are not that picky. The location is great if you need to be close to the airport and downtown. BUT!The parking in front of the hotel is pretty small and when it is full you have to go and try your luck parking on the street. The restaurant is pricey and you are better off going to Ken's Pancake House a couple of blocks away. It is open 24 hours a day and serves local food at half the price. The rooms are the worse i have seen in a long time, they are old and not very clean. The air conditioning in the bathroom sounded like an airplane and the carpet was dirty (or just plain old).We really are not fussy when it comes to hotel rooms, but that was way on the bottom of the list.Save yourself a headache and go next door, it can't be worse than this.

Staff and food. Old rooms that are in need of repair and paint. It's what I expected. They need to clean up their rooms but staff is friendly and helpful. No improvement needed there.

This motel was a good value. It is old but reasonable clean and well maintained. The free continental breakfast was good. The restaurant with a little but very good. The free entertainment was great. Parking was free but space was very limited.

Virtually no parking space, dirty room. This stay is my worst experience. The very first day I spent almost 2 hour trying to find a parking space at nearby street (not even in their so-called parking lot). Virtually there is no parking lot at all. Even on the street, it's so limited. I had to park at illegal spots. So during the night, I can't stop thinking if I will see my car next morning. When I asked staff, they just told you that you have to park on the street. The room is dirty and rusty. There is no power outlet I can use to recharge my camera and phone because the only 2 outlets available is so rusty. Stay away from this hotel.

"A cheap place to crash, but a lot like camping out."

Uncle Billy's was an enjoyable stay for the most part. The room had a nice view, partial ocean, and of the greenery outside. The only drawback to the room was the size and firmness of the beds. A little short, and on the soft side. The Continental breakfast was very nice, it provided all I needed for busy mornings. The restaurant had excellent food for evening dining, at competitive prices. It was nice having the General Store on the premises to purchase necessities. Banyon Drive was a very scenic area. The only problem on the outside was the lack of parking. It would be nice if Uncle Billy's could share the underground lot of the Hilo Hawaiian nextdoor.
