Date of Stay:
August, 2009
Before this visit I stayed in the same hotel in April 09, on checking out I was given a voucher that I will get 25% off from their best available rates. In August i checked in yes I was given 25% off but the room given to me was 30% smaller with no place to even keep luggage.Shocked when I complained was told that their rates change daily by the reception and the room I stayed in April has increased by 50% i still dont understand their logic. Will never again stay in this hotel.

Nice roomI had a lovely stay here, staff were very nice and the Hotel right across from the railway station. Room was just the right size for one. I would go back again.

The hotel was very noisy at night with guests coming in at all hours after a night out. On a Friday and Saturday night, it was impossible to get a good night's sleep. Although the hotel was reasonably priced, it's not worth putting up with the late night distrurbances.

Room was very comfortable and clean. Excellent value for money. Location, across from central station and within walking distance of city/river/metro/bus, brilliant. Would definitely stay again! Only minus was that wifi came as an extra cost.

Looking for a hotel at short notice...Give the County a miss. Unfortunate timing was the main reason we ended up at the County, the reason being one of Newcastle's University's had been celebrating a school graduation, so naturally the choice of hotels at short notice was a limited. The hotel, though plesant from the outside, looked tired whilst walking through the entrance. After using possibly the slowest elivator in history you are greated with a drab, damp smell upon arrival at the fourth floor. The walk to the room seemed to take an eternity - and wofully this is where the expierience really soured. The room itself was in very poor condition. Cracked and stained walls greet you upon entry, couple that with an overpowering heat and the single night stay certainly started on a bad foot. The old sash windows wouldnt stay open, hence the cause of the heat, however a small decade old fan was provided to blow warm air around the room if required. The wonderful view overlooking a small car park/refuse collection area was delightful, along with the vast towering buildings which seemed to wrap around the window helping to keep any natural light away from the room itself. The bathroom was again in a poor state, radical improvements are needed for both areas. Though the room itself was very poor I would like to praise the hotel staff - their quick and plesant response was a joy, as a number of small requests were qulickly dealt with to no added cost. All in all, I will not be returning to this hotel by choice, however if by some unfortunate series of events I did end up back at the County Hotel I would be more than happy to provide a tip for the great service!

Stag WeekendThis hotel is excellently situated directly across from the train station and is an ideal base for visiting the city and in particular the nightlife

Hotel overall was quite nice with friendly staff. My particular room had green staines/mould on the wall and loose tiles on the bathroom floor but for the sake of one night i could live with it.

Watch out for hidden chargesThe TV is hard to operate and the remote is only used if you want to pay for TV. At checkout I got the surprise of a very expensive phone charge for making a local call. I guess this was in the fine print is a book in the room but at those rates they should have it posted in the rooms. The rooms were a bit shabby & small. I paid the same price for hotels in Edinburugh and London and they were much nicer. The best thing was the convenience to the train station.

Rooms rather shabbyWhilst some effort has been made with reception, the first room I was given smelt strongly of urine, and the second which whilst acceptable was shabby. It was rather warm when I stayed and the only 'cooling' was a rather cheap fan, no air conditioning, and although the windows could be opened, by about 3 inches, there was no way to keep them open other than by propping with the in-room bible. I think this is classed as a 3 star, but would say it was at the bottom end. And it was not cheap either, despite the Late Rooms discount!

Week end with the boysIn the main the hotel was excellent value for money the one down side was the lack of air conditioning. all of our rooms were very hot, even taking into account that the weather was very hot. It didn't help that all the radiators in the hallways were on full blast even though the staff at reception isn't that everything was turned off.

This Hotel was nice and clean and was ideal for our 2 day city break as it's very close to the Centre of town and directly opposite the train station..The only problem was the bar closed early, and we were told to order drinks from the Reception. There was only a limited amount of drinks available (1 or 2 spirits) and the gentleman who was on Reception was very abrupt and unhelpful.

Thistle NewcastleFantastic location directly opposite train station.Bit difficult to negotiate through heavy doors (2 sets) with luggage.Staff v helpful and chatty.Room was 'single' sized but had double bed so bit tight but worth it for large bed.Batroom clean and functional.Decor a little dated but fine.

Only one towel in a twin room! And only one biscuit! Otherwise, no complaints - didn't use the restaurant, as breakfast available round corner for £4, instead of £12.95

Small room...I arrived quite late so didn't experience the hotel much outside of my room and the room service. The food was great, as was the service. However, the single room was very small, and I would be inclined to book a double next time.

The Cheaper the Rate, the Smaller the Room!Very good rate, but room ridiculously small. Could not open wardrobe door because of TV stand. No pay per view films in room, despite 3 requests. Just told that server down, so nothing can be done.Restaurant service and food top notch.Poor choice of beers in bar.Breakfast expensive.

Quality of roomThe room needed a little maintenance in the decor.

View!Since I arrived late at night, I did nor realise that the room looked onto a dark, dingy back of the building - not too great!Windows were in a poor state! At £79 per night - definitely overpriced!

Newcastle ThistleI had a very enjoyable stay at the Thistle. It was only 1 night but I found it to be good value for money, very clean and tidy, and the staff very friendly and helpful. The hotel is situated perfectly in the centre, right across from the train station. However, the car parking was not easy to find (there is a hotel car park) but the 1 way systems around that area made it hard to get to. Ended up parking across the road in the station car park which was adequate, if a bit expensive for over 24hours. The breakfast was delicious, plenty of hot food, and the bar and entrance to the hotel very smart and relaxed. The room was quite luxurious, very clean, however the room was at the front of the hotel where there was some traffic noise. It was also very hot!
