on entering we were initially a bit intimitated by the host who seemed a bit abrubt and in a hurry to get rid of us(to our rooms that is)but realized at breakfast that this was just part of his mannerisms...:)Room was quite a large one for three and alltough basic, very comfortable for a short stay.Everything was clean and worked, but should we have wanted to watch tv,this was impossible as picture quality was really poor.

First impressions!!! and atfer that!!!We where met by a dirty looking man who smelt of alcohol? They wanted payment on arrival yet charged me 50p extra to use my debit card and then payment was not excepted as someone was using the phone? We had a room that was dirty in the bathroom as i had to put used soup and shampoo sachets in the dust bin from the last guests?? not my job?? Breakfast was slow and cold with people who were not use to cooking? English breakfast was bad. As for the rest on offer is was worst!!!

the guisborough 2on arrival reception area almost made us go home, It was grubby and had a stale smell, but decided to see what room was like. Room was ok it had a new shower room and towels were very clean and changed each day. the breakfast was lovely although on last day we were last down and had to wait for a table which was not cleaned from last occupant and condiments had been used and not changed. also very little left on buffet table. saying that the cooked breakfast was excellant and well cooked.

Well placed agreeable set-upEase of access and parking were first rate given the closeness to Oxford city centre. The owners were courteous and helpful. Caution on the stairs inside - my wife fell breaking a wrist.

DisappointedBreakfast was nice. The chap who gave us a key barely said a word to us. The room was cramped, the toilet dripped, and the bed was horrendously uncomfortable.

Great location but everything else was disappointingGuesthouse was in a very good location, very close to town. However, there was extremly poor customer service and the experience in the guesthouse was not enjoyable in the least. When we made the reservation we said we were arriving at 7pm but at 6pm had a rude phone call. We were also charged at this time, plus a bit extra and was not even told until the following morning. Everything else also managed not to disappoint. Lack of choice, minimum standards, strict rules and bad customer service.

British Guest Houses! We booked late and the Sportsview in Oxford was the only place left in our price range. As a light sleeper my heart sank when I saw it was so close to a very busy main road and it sank further when I realised we were on the ground floor. The dreary decor and plethora of notices telling you what you 'cannot' and 'should not' do seemed typical of what I have read about Gueshouses in the 50's and 60's. It made us feel like naughty children rather than adults enjoying a weekend in Oxford and I had a strong urge to rebel. The room was cool because, of course, the heating was rationed and the thin, swirly carpet was an assault to the feet and eyes. However, the beds were clean and relatively comfortably, tea and coffee were available in the room, the shower was hot and strong and the TV worked. After a traffic-disturbed night we went down to an OK breakfast in a comfortable dining room. The manager and staff were friendly and there wasn't anything really wrong, except the sense that we were somehow doing something naughty all the time. If the room had cost £30 - £40 I might be saying ' a bit noisy but good value,' however, at £66 I felt cheated. Admittedly accomodation in Oxford is extortionate but we have stayed in nice hotels all over the UK for less.
