the only negative was we had an 'inside' room (open to a center court) and despite it being cool outside, it was hot in the room. the ceiling fan helped, but couldn't really use it effectively, because on high, it made us sneeze. location could not be better. right outside the Powell station and Visitor's Info; at the Cable car turnaround, shopping center across the street.

The location was amazing, right in the middle of everything! The rooms were very small.

The hotel was in an excellent location. However, our room on the second floor was very noisy with music being played in the building next to us until 9.00pm which was ok. However, it restarted at 1.30am until 4.30 am. Not ideal when you have spent all day travelling. When we told the front desk they just asked us to request a middle room next time we booked!!! So if you stay here make sure you request a middle floor room otherwise a lovely hotel.

What a fantastic location! Close to cable car (right at the door!), restaurants, shops, Union Square and more all within very easy walking distance. Staff were wonderful, very helpful and knowledgeable of the area. I would stay here again and recommend it to everyone.

4 1/2 Smiley faces in the review I read says it all. This hotel has a fabulous location...20 steps from the Powell Stree Cable Car turnaroud. Bart Station is a few steps more and the San Francisco Centre is across the street. Economical dining at the centers lower level...or go up Powell St. to Lori's 50's diner or Tads Steakhouse.. Around the corner is a Subway and next to that is my favorite....Coldstone IceCream!!!!!...Walgreens near by for incidentals. Hotel has been nicely remodeled. Only downside is that most of the lower priced rooms have no view. Mine opened to an interior square for ventelation....ceiling fan to move the air around. Room size was good for an older SF hotel. Lobby staff VERY helpful. I checked out early Sunday morning and left my luggage behind the counter...no charge..but of course I tipped the staff who retrieved it. All in all a GREAT experience without going to the poorhouse. My wife and I are returning later in the summer. Little coffee/soup/sandwich take out place in the lobby. I liked it. I definitly rate it a 5 for the value returned....

We stayed at the Powell for three nights in room 244 which was a very cute junior suite. The location was amazing. Right in the center of Union Square, steps from the trolley station and the shopping. My God, every designer store you can think of is a few steps away. The only negative was that on the first night we where there, the door handle was loose and broke off. There was no one on staff that could fix it until the morning, so we where stuck in our room that nightbecause if we left to town for a late dinner, then we would not be able to go back in to our room. That was a big bummer, but we where determined to have a good time and enjoyed our suite playing board games and sipping wine. We had an amazing little vacation at san Francisco.

I loved that the hotel was literally RIGHT on the cable car turn around and bus stop. I could just step right outside and take the cable car to chinatown or fishermans wharf. The hotel was very affordable. And since i stayed in a cheaper hotel, i didnt want it to be a cookie cutter hotel like all the big chains,so this was great. It had real character and i bet has been around for a long time. But, since it was an older building,it wasnt spotlessly clean (example:dirt in between tiles on bathroom floor)but it looked like they had done renovations so it was nice (new paint, painted over ceramic in bathtub). My room had a flat screen,a SUPER comfy bed, and old fashioned radiator and pictures of the old cable cars which was a wonderful touch. The floors were a bit squeaky in the halls, so i could hear people leaving in the morning and also people screaming in the streets could be heard, but it never really bothered me. But if your super picky and need absolute quiet this isnt the place for you. If your plan is to spend all your time relaxing in the hotel you may want to pick one with more amenities (gym, pool etc) and a bigger room. But when i travel im there to see the city im visiting, so i dont spend a lot of time in my room so the size of room was adequate. The check in and out was SUPER quick which is great for when your tired after a long flight. I was a lone female traveler and the location of this hotel was really safe especially since the cable car drops you off right in front of the hotel. Id have to say that the best part of this hotel was the location, its AMAZINGLY convenient. I also liked that it was affordable and the rooms had real character which added to the ambiance of my trip to san francisco. I would definately recommend this hotel to my friends!

Hotel well placed and room comfortable. Towels fresh and clean every day. Only drawback - room was at top of mezzanine stairs and therefore could be very noisy early on with guests moving about. Air con fantastic.

Other than some cosmetic issues in my room, this was probably the best travel experience I have had in San Francisco.

The location of the Powell was perfect - right next to cable cars and BART, great shopping and restaurants. The staff was very helpful allowing us to check in early and out late as we had runners in the Nike run. I had a confirmed request for two twins. Since they had filled those available rooms they put us in a suite with two bedrooms, each with a queen and sharing one bath. The rooms were faced to the inside so we did not have all the cable car noise. We also had ceiling fans in each room. I felt the bathroom floor was a little dirty but I know old buildings are hard to clean. We enjoyed the visit.

We found our stay at the Powell to be an excellent choice. It was very convenient for us (Bart, cable car, & bus). Though it is an older hotel, all features have been updated and we found it to be very clean. Service, especially the front desk people were outstanding. Very friendly atmosphere. They have even started a happy hour - not sure of day and times, but believe from Mon-Thur, 5:30 to 6:30pm, where all snacks and drinks are FREE. All in all would definitely stay there again and highly recommend to others who are looking for a hotel with friendly staff, good service, good clean rooms, and convenient location.

Perfect for a girls trip. The location was great! The room was not extravegant, however, the room was clean and the bed was comfy. The hotel decor was pleasant. It might not have all the amenities of some of the other hotels- but the room itself was just as nice as many 3-stars I have stayed it. Great Value for the $$. I would definately stay here again.

Decor, beds, location, customer service, coffeemaker. No microwave, problem with wireless on mycomputers, no microwave, no fridge, only one sugar packet per coffee packet! Very friendly staff, great location, my husband did not like the fact that the fire escape window was left wide open. We had trouble getting on wireless, were told all macs often do and to use the one downstairs. Wanted ice and were told machine was broken and to ask at desk and they'd get from kitchen. Beautiful room, finally got wireless working on Fire fox (not safari). Just felt that they were skimping a bit. Like the coffee packet had 1 sugar in it and 1 creamer nothing extra. 1 top roll in room. We are used to having a fridge in room to save on food, yet if you are the type to eat out that will not bother you. Staff was ultra helpful and friendly.

Charming, clean, and fantastic location at the right price! $50 deposit for incidentals (was refunded). The Powell is a well preserved historic San Francisco hotel. It had all the charm and personal service of a bed and breakfast. Great price for the area and quality of the hotel. A real gem. Tuesdays through Thursdays there is a happy hour in the mezzanine level of the hotel that includes snacks and free wine/beer. Overall an incredible value!

The staff was very friendly; nothing was too much trouble. Shower was not very clean; elevator sometimes did not work. No heating in room - was cold at night and bathroom was very chilly. The hotel is nicely decorated with fresh flowers on every floor and has an old-fashioned but up to date feel about it. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful and nothing is too much trouble; there was nothing I asked of them that they did not do cheerfully.

The Powell's location is excellent for getting around SF! The Powell Hotel is a good value. The rooms are small but ours was clean and the bed comfortable. Not a lot of high end amenities but if you are here to see the city and don't spend much time in your hotel then this is the place for you. Parking in SF is expensive everywhere but the Powell's rates were one of the lower ones we saw. The staff was pleasant and helpful we had a good time there. We would definitely consider staying at the Powell if we were to return to SF one day.
