Attractions:
Picton is the perfect place to base a holiday or as a start point for the Queen Charlotte Track. It is also the first port of call for visitors travelling on an interisland ferry from Wellington to the South Island. The area is rich in maritime and Maori history, which can be explored at Picton’s museum with its many historical artefacts. Picton has a fine selection of arts and crafts outlets and many cafés where you can sit outdoors and enjoy the sunny atmosphere. On the foreshore you will find the scenic cruise boats, a sea kayaking company, small boat and bike hire, the mini-golf course, the aquarium (‘hands-in’ for the brave!), and the community museum. At the Edwin Fox museum is the hull of this India-built teak ship constructed in 1853. Its 47 years of maritime service ended in Picton in 1900. The ship is in a purpose-built museum at Dunbar Wharf.
