Rental cars are available from both international airports (S.Jose or Liberia) and it takes around 3 hours to get to the main entrance of the Hotel Arenal Lodge. They all will offer air-conditioned and will stop whenever the passenger asks for.

Dining:
The fine restaurant decorated with wood and pictures of the volcano offers an international menu prepared by professional chefs and the service is done in a very friendly Costa Rican way. The Arenal Volcano stands right in front of the restaurant which is located in front of a forest where wild animals can be seen in their natural habitat. Dozens of different birds can be seen during breakfast or lunch time. At night the possibility to see the eruption from the volcano makes dining an exciting experience. The menu uses organic food whenever possible and we are recommended by many tour agents in the area as our location is quite touristic and unique to appreciate nature and the volcano at the same time.
Surrounding Location:
The Hotel is in the safest place to observe the lava flowing from the Volcano Arenal. The main entrance is right past the dam of the Arenal lake and Arenal Lodge is the only hotel in the lake with its own marina.
Additional Information:
The famous movie "Spy Kids" number two was filmed in the area and the artists and crew stayed at Arenal Lodge. Also the "Congo" had its main stars at Arenal Lodge during their filmation. The scenery from the hotel is just spetacular even when the volcano is covered with clouds. The hotel is in the middle of a rain forest maintaining the vegetation green and rich all year around making it possible to the butterflies, birds and wild animals to stay in this area full time.
Children Guests:
Kids up to 12 years stay for free. After this age there is a US$20,00 charge which will include the buffet breakfast.

We spent half of our vacation at the Eco Lodge and the other half at a Costa Rican beach resort. My best memories from our trip were at the Eco Lodge. The Lodge is slightly outdated but it only adds to the charm. If you stay, make sure you upgrade to the cabins. They were awesome and had beautiful views. We could see the volcano erupting in the distance at night time. The other rooms didn't look too great. They were attached to the bar and dining room and couldn't have had any sort of view. The drive from Liberia International is long and bumpy so be prepared. The dining is not too great but it works. There are not other dining options. There are hiking trails and horseback riding. The riding trails lead to beautiful views also. They also do ziplines which was a blast and easy for young and old alike. The hike there was the hardest part. This is definitely not a hotel for the high maintenance or luxury seeking. But, if you are in for an adventurous, uplifting vacation, you will love this. The biggest complaint for me was that there was nothing to do after 10 p.m. We would eat dinner at 6:30, sit at the bar until it closed at 10, and then we wouldn't know what to do with ourselves. There isn't a pool or other form of entertainment. Overall, I would recommend this Lodge. I know I will never experience anything like it again. I have amazing memories from the Eco Lodge.
