Long weekend break - The HowardVery friendly attentive staff - tea delivered to room at any hour of day or night. Not like hotels I've been to before. More like a private house with Butler service than run of the mill hotel. Only food experienced was breakfast - cannot comment on restuarant. A few small criticisms - noise from lift (as lift shaft next to room), and shower had low pressure, but we were on top floor.

interesting little luxury hotel You have your own butler which is handy just felt bad as had no cash on me when I arrived. Staff all seemed nice slight problem when checked out had to chase my shoes which were left for polishing and also was charged for an extra wine. Situation was resolved though.

The HowardLast minute booking. Small room and Tv control was defective. Service excellent (George) and attentive. My room was single and probably not reflective of other larger offerings. Would try it again but would look for a larger room.

Special HotelEverything about this hotel is special....except the size of the 'Randolph room'. I booked a single and I really got a single! Next time I'll book a double room. Otherwise excellent.

Service at a priceThe Howard prides itself on the service it provides its customers and to be honest so it should!! However it should be noted that you pay for the service and if you're only going to be there a night or two it's probably a waste of money as you won't use what you're paying for.

Totally stress free experience, and when can you say that about a hotel. Valet parking, bags to your room, checking in with no fuss. Tea and coffee delivered to your room, whenever you like, ironing service and lovely staff. I could go on and on, a fantastic hotel, will be back.

Booked a single room, but had no idea it would be minute. Its condition fell far below my 5 star expectations. Shelves in wardrobe were missing pins so they fell down when something was placed on them; the entrance to the bathroom door was partially blocked by the TV and the unit it sat on; the bathroom carpet was frayed, cut and badly fitted; the shower had 2 cracked or chipped tiles; water pressure very poor. 2nd night was thankfully a far superior room - its bathroom the size of the single room downstairs, yet included an armchair with a broken frame, no hot water for the shower, yet plenty for the bath and a loo that didn't flush well. Naturally, had a chat with Customer Services, who were approachable, and moved me to better accommodation, but I'm just genuinely disappointed. I've looked forward to staying at the Howard for some years, but this was just not the quality I anticipated.

This hotel really goes out of its way to "go the extra mile" in customer service. If that's what you want, this is the place for you. Super comfy bed, fantastic bathroom; bit of noise from the lift and from outside but that's a comment, not a complaint. You get the impression that this hotel, justifiably, doesn't get many complaints..

The location of this hotel was perfect for me, my room was delightful and the young butlers surpassed themselves; however I found one member of the more mature management sniffy. I invited a girlfriend back to the hotel bar where we enjoyed drinks and some food. Initially we were attended by several younger member of staff who went out of their way to offer help and suggestions. However, we were later attended by a more mature gentleman who kept coming in to the drawing room and either moving furniture or random ornaments as if he was checking up on us; it made us feel most uncomfortable and took away from the enjoyment of our evening. The following morning when I came down to breakfast, the gentleman who took my order was brusque with me and while I was waiting for my food I could hear him whispering in the pantry to a colleague. Again this made me feel uncomfortable but what I did note was that there seemed to be a greater welcome for the American tourists. A good butler or waiter should be formal but should never make somebody feel uneasy and although I left a well deserved tip for the younger members of staff, I left this hotel wondering if it was dollar signs that put smiles on other faces.

Hotel corresponded excellently in advance and had all necessary arrangements ready and waiting upon our arrival. Butler staff members Ross and Dominic were excellent! (I only rate it lower for value because i am still in sticker shock with the UK pound.) The Howard is everything I look for in a vacation/business hotel.: quiet, personal service and excellent breakfasts! The best porridge I have had in 25 years! I can only hope to return soon!

An unexpected delight. Room booked for a business trip at random, but turned out to be a charming hotel with fantastic personalised services (butler) and excellent breakfast in the morning. Exellent value for money - given high rates in Edinburgh generally.

Immaculate, discreet service. The drawing room has the feel of a private club (well stocked with single malts!)Food for a hotel was very good (limited menu) and an extensive wine list.Fresh coffee anytime and hot chocolate at bedtime. Shoes polished and clothes ironed at no charge! Some traffic noise from main road facing rooms.A very pleasant alternative to the chain hotels - will definitely stay again

We booked one of the luxury rooms which according to the hotel, all have individual character and seating areas. I must say when we first saw the room, we were rather disappointed to the point that we went back to reception to confirm that we were in the right one. The room was rather small and overlooking a car park, there was not much evidence of individuality and the seating area consisted of a small table with two chairs. Also there was no toothbrush provided but could be supplied for an additional charge, and the sandwich we ordered in the room was not served as it was described in the menu.On a positive note I must say that the bathroom was large and tastefully decorated, the bed super comfortable and the room service very efficient. Overall the Howard it is a very nice and clean hotel but for a 5* hotel and at the normal rate they charge for a room like the one we stayed, you would expect to get a bit more -at least a free toothbrush!

This hotel was just lovely - I wanted to live there! Staff are friendly and warm without being patronising or obsequious, and nothing was too much trouble. How I loved having my own butler! I think my room was an upgrade, as it had a separate sitting room. Gorgeous Frette linen on the bed and bathrobe, and everything had been thought of. I didn't want to have dinner there as I was on my own, but the recommendation of a family-run Italian up the road was a delight. Only slight gripe was the disappointing kipper for breakfast - frozen, I would guess, and a shame to say the least for the £16.50 breakfast charge. But overall, my new favourite hotel in Edinburgh, by miles.

I travel to many hotels of all different quality and i have to say that this is the best hotel i have ever stayed at (to the point that i check that they have availability before agreeing to travel on business. The staff cannot do enough to help in any way, its like returning home after a long trip

The butler was extremely kind, friendly and efficient. Drinks at the bar very disappointing: a cold room, no ambiance, no snacks served with drinks. Concerning dinner - the choice was very limited, no traditional dishes being served. With only 2 people in the kitchen it took over 45' before we were served at our table and that despite the fact that we had ordered while we were in the bar.

Lovely Hotel. Wanted a quiet luxury hotel in the center of town as a base for our visit. Got exactly that. Standard of service was superb. Will definately be going back again. Not really ideal for younger children.
