Description:
Set within a peaceful, tree-lined grove, this independently owned property is just a 10-minute stroll from York's historic city centre and offers comfortable accommodation, barlounge facilities and excellent conferencing facilities. The building dates back to the 1900s and was originally built by William Pentey, who was of some importance in the late Victorian period. The structure was commissioned by a Leeds tobacconist, who wanted to expand his business using the River Ouse to deliver tobacco to his customers. Later, during the First and Second World Wars, the building was used by the army paymasters. The property was later sold and developed into a hotel. Today, the building still retains some charming original features, such as the splendid staircase and leaded windows throughout. Our friendly staff are here to help and ensure that we cater for all your needs. A spacious free car park is situated to the rear of the building allowing you to leave your car behind and enjoy the delights of York on foot. Pets are also accepted by prior arrangement.

Friendly and efficient serviceWe stayed for 2 nights in July 2009. The room was a good size though the decor was dated but clean. We had a room to the rear of the hotel and it was very quiet though as this is in a cul de sac, there is no passing traffic. The en suite was a bit small but the shower was good. Great breakfast and they were happy to change the items in the full English to suit. Friendly staff. The hotel is very handy for the city centre with plenty of parking.

wonderful location; nice staffThe hotel is well located at the edge of York but within easy distance to the historic center. The owners and staff are friendly and accessible. The room is basic but reasonably sized. Breakfast is the standard English but the staff is happy to give extra toast; coffe, tea and juice always available. Have no complaints and had a very pleasant stay.

Very friendly and helpful service. Charming atmosphere in the old house. Good parking provision. Quiet surroundings in cul-de-sac in Clifton, which is one of the very nicest areas of York.

A clean and very friendly hotel, close to the town centre, and providing a large room, good facilities, an excellent breakfast and very good value for money. Slightly dated decor, but that was more then made up for by everything else.

Beuatiful small quiet hotel with friendly courteous staffWhat a find. A night here feels like a weeks holiday. A really quiet location in a tree lined cul de sac. The room was beautifully decorated and the staff so very helpful. Breakfast was first class, cooked to perfection and of excellent quality. I couldn't finish mine there was so much. A very realistic 10 minutes walk from York Centre which my girlfriend completed very easily after a recent knee op. I would really really recommend this hotel.

Made To Feel At HomeA nice hotel only 10 mins walk from the centre of York. Enough room to park the car.For the price the room was excellent. The owner made me feel very welcome and I felt at ease at the hotel. Must also comment on the lovely cooked breakfast in the morning. Staying here made my overnight trip to York a happy one.

Excellent locationThe Hotel is very nice and in a great place - only 10 min walk to the Minister and centre of York. We booked a double room which was on the 3rd floor and adequate enough for our stay as we were out all day and only came back to change and sleep. No major compaints about the hotel as the staff were very polite, helpful and courteous. The breakfast was wonderful but just to nit pick as I can't really find fault, we found the room a little disappointing. Only 1 window which was too high up to look out of. TV was at the side of the bed so was a little difficult to watch the TV later at night. Decor was also a little dated but it was very clean and comfortable. Bathroom was very clean but shower was not very powerful. This wouldn't stop us staying there again and we had a fantastic bank holiday weekend, helped very much by the lovely weather. Excellent location - peaceful yet right near to the centre.

Dated and Tired DecorOn arrival my partner and |I where shown to a room at the very top of the Hotel which hadn't been used for a good while. The furniture was covered in a thick layer of dust, we compained and were moved to another room, identical in decor but without the dust. Very tired and dated, I will not be making a return visit.

Glorified B and BIt cost £85 for 1 nights b and b. Which is way overpriced. The room was very dated, the ensuite was terrible, aged, paper thin walls, and a very poor shower. I have travelled all over the world and as usual the standard of accommodation in the UK is poor especially in our big tourist centres. The staff were very helpful and the breakfast was good but they couldn't save a really poor room.

A Nice Place To StayI only spent one night at the Groves, but found the staff to be helpful and friendly. The room was clean and comfortable and the breakfast was good with plenty of choice. When visiting York again, I wiil definately consider booking at thia hotel again.

I have stayed at the groves hotel twice on business, and wouldn't hesitate to stay again. The rooms are spacious and clean, and the TV's have good quality pictures. The best bit is the breakfast, plenty of choice, freshly cooked. great value. The only down side is the water pressure on the top floor, where the shower wasn't great, just about adequate.
