Good value for money, very nice bar and reception area, I like the old world feel. The single room was not situated very well as I heard the staff empying the bottle bins first thing in the morning (5.30am), but other than that I was very happy and would stay again.

A delight to stay in, 5 minutes' walk from the railway station, right in the heart of town, historic building with lots of nooks and crannies, but up-to-date facilities. Extremely helpful staff - highly recommended.

The George has character and is not your standard chain hotel. It is easy walking distance to Reading Station and not as pricey as nearby hotels. I found the George to be clean and comfortable, quite the opposite of some of the more negative reviews I have seen. My room #417 was spacious, clean and had a comfortable bed with clean sheets and a good but not fantastic mattress. It was well equiped and had a good layout. The only thing amiss was that most of the telly (big flat screen LCD) channels had very bad reception. The George is a very old building so it has stairs, no lift and narrow corridors. I stayed in late Sept. when the weather was cool so cannot judge room comfort in mid-summer or dead of winter. Staff was friendly and the breakast was good. Would not hesitate to stay there again.

My main complaint would be the cleanliness. The sinks were clogged up with hair and the bed covers were stained on the underside! When I tries to get a bottle of wine or a beer after the bar closed I found that I couldn't because they had sold everything the night before and nothing was replaced! The selection for breakfast was quite good although the eggs on the buffet were cold and the sausage and bacon were quite greasy. Furthermore, and perhaps most shocking, on check out no one asked how the stay was!

I arrived on a swelteringly hot Sunday afternoon. Checked in and my heart sank when I got to my tiny oven of a room the size of a broom cupboard. The filthy windows opened about 4cm on to the street. I went to the receptionist and said that the room was thoroughly unsatisfactory. No problem. I was transferred to a larger room where the single window opened wide. I was lucky. If there were no other rooms available I think I'd have gone nuts.Breakfast included. Passable but for the sliced bread. No fresh rolls or croissants.

A charming old Coaching House but now surrounded by modern retail/enteratinment including the massive Oracle centre which has an entrance right next door. The Executive Room to be fair was large, very large, as was its bathroom. BUT the council turn up most morning at SIX-THIRTY with one of their BIGGEST and empiest! trucks and empty about 12 large 'wheelie bins' RIGHT outside the window, Crash, clatter wallop just when you'd least want it. THEN, and of course the Hotel don't tell you about it, Friday night is Disco night, no doubt Saturday is too but we were gone before we could know! - and its right below the bedroom where until early hours you get the thud-thud-crash of the LOUD music, even hear the voices/comments of some of the more raucous revellers. DON'T stay here weekends, especially in the 'Executive' room!! And if you do - take ear plugs!

Superior suite is beautiful. Well located, with adequate parking in Oracle. Internet access was down and the night manager was unhelpful in getting it fixed.

The lack of parking is a problem. Nearest carpark is the Oracle and as I stayed on a Saturday when the Oracle was full, so I had to park as the sister hotel down the road.

Good place right in the heart of the town yet surprisingly quiet. Parking is an issue. Nearest car park is Queens Road which is £2 overnight (6pm-8am) then £10 for the whole day. Local food outlets OK but the Tandoori just around the corner is genuinly top notch.

In my room the blinds/shades to the windows made it seem as though anyone outside could see straight in - this I found unnerving. A sign would have cleared this up - or did everyone in the courtyard below see everything I thought they did. The window frame in the bathroom was thickly layered with dust. A sign is required in the breakfast room is required - to tell customers where they can safely put the lid from the large warm food compartment as according to a regular visitor it is always ending up falling down because no-one knows where to put it safely. I would have liked to have stayed longer. The staff I met were very friendly and helpful. Mick Morris.

Handy for the night life but what a pain to park any where nearby!! Room was shabby with the worst shower I have experienced in years.....Never ever pay the full price for this hotel, in fact dont think its worth more than £30

Well positioned for central Reading, the hotel shows signs of wear and tear and doesn't compare well with the more modern Ibis/Travelodge type of premises. Fine for an overnight if you get reduced rates - definitely wouldn't pay the standard £120+ per night rate.

I came to the hotel from the train station rolling my bags behind me. No one knew where the hotel was until I finally found a cabby who could direct me. The hotel was, as advertised, only a ten or fifteen minute walk from the station --- if you are walking in the right direction. After reading other reviews, I had huge misgivings, but I was happily surprised first by the service and then by the cleanliness of the place. The people who greeted me and helped me with my bags couldn't have been nicer. I arrived late and hungry after the kitchen had closed, but they helped me to order from a Chinese restaurant that delivered. All in all a pleasant overnight.

quite nice in that it was different (not your "bog standard, same all across the world hotel room")- genuienly an old building. For example the day cover on the bed though looked in severe need of a wash and the mattress of the bed itself was really, really soft.

I stay with many hotels on laterooms most good some not so good but this is the only hotel that was ABSOLUTLY TERRIBLE.For a start i was told on late rooms breakfast was included and come morning was told there is no breakfast, the bar was not open, when i asked for a discount to cover the lack of breakfast the manageress started being rude to be.I would never stay here again and would advise everyone to stay away. The rooms were not very clean , the staff rude and the beds not pleasant.
