Received an interesting "welcome" when entering the hotel. Was slightly reminiscent of Basil Fawlty at Fawlty Towers. Glad we didn't have anything to complain about as I feel we would have been put in our place. Our stay comprised of one night only and for that it was comfortable enough. Breakfast was good and the children enjoyed the adventure of it all.

Strange policy of paying for the room upon check-in....we looked at room first, which was OK but I've never stayed anywhere where you've had to pay on arrival! Poor car-parking facilities, probably only holds about 20 cars and this seems to be a general problem of the area. Food not great....bit like a school canteen, hotel has a lot of guests though so perhaps this is inevitable? Room was good but other areas of the hotel need improving.

Seaside breakEasy access to hotel in a quiet seafront location. The hotel is looking tired both inside and out and in our view is in need of modernisation. Internet access either by having a customer terminal or wifi access would be a plus.

Never again!I had a single room, ensuite was 2ft wide, room could not have been wider than 6ft no soap, no heating, no remote for tv it was on channel 4 could not change channel, Breakfast was buffet on the fri, that was ok, sat morn, table service my colleague was down before me and ignored for 10 mins, in the end we did not have time for breakfast.

We travelled as two couples so had booked two rooms. The service and all the staff were most helpful, polite and friendly. The food was first class. We were surprised to find on our visit that dinner was available to bed and breakfast guests at a modest £10.00 (Special offer). The weather was very wintry, being November, so we took advantage of the dinner offer.. It can only be said that it was excellent! The hotel itself is quite a way from the town centre but does overlook the sea and is in a most pleasant location. Very quiet and peaceful. it's obviously a fairly mature building so it does have lots of character. I would say it does seem to attract its regulars, if I'm any judge so that speaks volumes really. The fact that our stay was approximately half the price of a leading hotel in Scarborough itself was very interesting! We will most certainly add it to our "Favourites" list..

On entering the reception of this hotel it smelled very musty. The lift was a double door opening outwards and then a gate type slider very dangerous contraption. The room was dismal dark and dingy and not clean, the bathroom had so much mildew it was sickening. The toilet was dirty, the valance on the bed was black at the bottom, the pillowcase had a hole in it. The towels were thin and had seen better days. The cost of this hotel is definitely too high if I had been able to get a refund I would have walked away and not stayed here.

Service in Hotel generally was good, but service in restaurant was terrible. 2 separate waitresses were very offhand. Food for breakfast was not very nice.

this hotel is very jaded and in need of updating, the one lift is just too dated and awkward to get in and out of, external appearance is very shabby, our bed cover was filthy and stained

The Clifton Hotel is typical of most hotels I have stayed in in Scarborough. The decor is outdated and the rooms are extremely basic. We had an evening meal in the hotel on the first night - it was only £10 per person so represented value in terms of the quantity, but the food was very plain. I was pleased however to be offered nut loaf as I am vegetarian and most hotels offer 'something with cheese' as the vegetarian option. Breakfast was very good and also offered a vegetarian option. The hotel staff were very pleasant and helpful.

A tired hotel which needs a good makeover. Evening meals are poor (and poor value) and breakfasts are miserable with no variation from day to day.Bathroom and toilet for room 244 are on front of building
