The hotel is in an ideal location within walking distance to restauants and shopping. Rooms are updated and have some have nice views of the water or mountains. The hotel has been here for years and is a downtown landmark. I would recommend staying here.

I am a business traveler and I have never been so thoroughly nickeled and dimed as I was at the Captain Cook. Everything was an added charge - the most incrediable (and offensive)was 10 cents per minute to use your phone card. Beds were very poorly made - no fitted sheets (even Motel 6's have them) and the sheets they did use were too small for the bed. The parking garage is across the street - another big charge. If you didn't pay for the valet to take your luggage you will have to carry it up a flight of stairs to get to the street level. You then have to cross the street - no street lights - to get to an unlighted, gloomy entrance. Very dark and there's no effort to clear the stairs or the doorway of ice and snow. It is just plain dangerous. Resturants are very good - probably the best in Anchorage - but massively understaffed. Hotel staff is uninterested in anything you might say. The hallways and meeting rooms were just cold - not chilly but cold. The heat never did come on. The hotel was obviously a Grand Old Lady in her day but definately on a downhill slide. Really very sad.

Hotel rooms are old, like being in the 70's. Yellows, oranges, wicker, BLAH. Expected nice, upper-class, etc. Shower and bathroom needs to be upgraded, its small. We purchased a junior suite and it was not "sweet". Do not pay the difference for the livingroom, you should have more than what is offered. Food was GREAT! rooom service at anytime was wonderful. Location was great, walking distance to most attractions was nice. Nicer places for the price...try Diamond Hotel...now thats nice (just no dining).

It was friendly and relaxing. The staff was lovely.

--First and foremost there is no shuttle from the airport!? When one pays close to * per night for a room, one would at least expect a shuttle to and from the airport. --If a room with two beds has been reserved, there are only twin beds available, no queens. --The windows do not block street sounds, light sleepers beware. --After a week stay, one would think one could have found the pool. This reveiwer never did find it. --In a hurry? One remember to leave plenty of time for one's shower. Water pressure is pathetic. --The reviewer does not have children but even she can tell this is not a "kid friendly" hotel. --Morning waitstaff at The Pantry had bad attitudes both mornings the reviewer shelled out * for breakfast. --On the plus side, the hotel is very clean, the food is passable, and the hotel is in a nice location but none of these reasons will get the reviewer to stay at the Hotel Captain Cook again.

Front Desk was just excellent help (better than concierge). Staff in stores were very nice and helpful. Place was clean and very convenient to downtown and busses. Free Wireless was great. Do not like having to pay for exercise room.

Nice hotel, on the first floor. The staff need lessons in hospitality. THE ROOMS HAVE NO AIR CONDITIONING! BEWARE! The windows only open 8 inches, and then only at the bottom. The rooms have a ceiling fan, but it doesn't cool the room down below 80 degrees, even when it is 60 degrees outside. The hall ways are hotter than the rooms, so leaving your door open to create a breeze doesn't work. The shower has a RAIN nozzle, so there's limited water pressure with which to bathe. Bring your own soap--theirs dries out your skin. I'll never stay here again--trust me and save your money--stay at the Hilton.

We stayed on the captains Deck, 17th floor, excellent staff, very nice. the room was a lot smaller than i expected, as was the shower. Excellent view of the inlet, and we could see mt. mckinnly from our room. We ate at the Crows nest, highly recommend it. Excellent food. All together, made for a wonderful night, room service 24/7 to the captains deck aswell. Recommend the Fruit platter with Champagne. If you do stay in the Captains deck ask for a larger room, or corner room with view of the inlet. I was in a middle room, average size room of most regular hotels.

Great hotel but no airport shuttle or coffee maker in room. Bath is very small but room is immaculate and beautifully decorated. Great food and service.

Besides the great view from the hotel room if you are lucky enough to get one that over looks the water it wasn't worth the price. There are several dining options in the hotel all very spendy. These room don't offer anything different then the local holiday express except a robe which really isn't all the comfortable.

"The bed was hard and old, no air conditioning, and had to leave the window open. Because the window was open, the outside street noise was loud and could not get a nice sleep in. Food prices was expensive and there was not breakfast buffet. Not recommended."

The Hotel Captain Cook was run like a well-oiled machine! The ambience was perfect. The staff were professional and friendly. The room was very comfortable, pleasantly decorated, with the finest of linens. We utilized the wireless internet services, which was easily explained in the hotel directory of services. We utilized room service. It was very fast and the food was great. We also used the services of the bellmen for luggage, and they too, were fast and efficient. The shops, restaurants, and lounges were all excellent, as were the staff. We enjoyed every moment we stayed and were sad to have to leave. We would definitely stay there again!

"Rooms are clean and maintained nicely by housekeeping. Stayed in a suite which includes a pull-out couch. The bathroom starts with an open room with a large vanity/sink. The tub/shower/ facilities are seperated by a door. Robes are provided. Bedroom included a king-sized bed, nightstands, armoire w/tv, chair, and closet. Bed was very comfortable. Room service was prompt and the food is excellent. Dining in the hotel is also wonderful. Overall, a wonderful hotel that makes everyone feel welcome... whether you're in jeans or a three-piece suit."

"We had to get this at the last minute. I had been turned off by negative reviews. They are wrong! This is a magnificent hotel, run by an extraordinary staff. Unknown to them, we came from the interior with a medical emergency and needed a good place. Thank God this hotel is here, with a beautiful location, in an historic district near the paths along the Cook Inlet and fine restaurants. The subdued lighting of the elegant corridors provides a necessary escape from the brilliance of the summer. This hotel competes with wonderful places in Paris, Vienna, Seville, Amsterdam, and Jerusalem."
