Stunning location- lying in the heated pool looking up into the rock cliffs of the white mountains, you could feel your blood pressure go down. Sipping coffee in an adirondack chair on the wrap-around porch, listening to the waterfall right next to the driveway, it was incredibly beautiful. You could picture wealthy travelers in 1920 arriving by horse and carriage. We would never have gone for the full price, but the discounted price was a bargain. Less than a chain hotel price, included the most elaborate breakfast buffet I have ever experienced. Fresh fruit, homemade granola, danish pastries, bacon, eggs, ham, home fries, waffles with warm syrup, PLUS an omelet station. We have traveled to resorts around the world and never seen such a buffet. A perfect getaway.

One of the 'Grand Hotels.' Spectacular setting in a gorge on lake under the mts. This place is great for a romantic getaway, or family gatherings or even a wedding. Terrific facilities for groups of all sizes.Two golf courses, one of them up the side of a mt. Stunning views. Mt. top dining and drinks out on the deck one of the most awesome settings! Rooms for every taste. Top of the line turret rooms are something to see! Every amenity imaginable. Red clay and hard tennis courts set in most spectacular setting I've ever played on. Dozens of hiking trails. Boating. Volley ball. Badmitten. Nitely entertainment in the lounge. Buffet breakfast is wonderful. We plan on going back! ....Now here's the downside: No cell phone service. Hi-speed internet available in all rooms by wireless only but insufficient band width (only 11mps) means you can't get on most of the time if someone's downloading music or movies or using it for interactive games. No T.V. in the rooms (except the suits) but we didn't view that as a negative, enjoying feeling "away in the mts." Hotel restaurants are good (over-priced) but there are some excellent restaurants within an easy drive. Skip the MAP. Recommend the breakfast package only unless you go with a family. Full meal plan makes sense with a family or with one of the package deals combined with golf. All in all, we were bowled over by the hotel and the location. All the staff were genuinely friendly and eager to please. We had a wonderful long weekend there and recommend it highly. We'll be going back and bringing some other couples with us.

I came to the Balsams with my entire extended family for a week and had a phenomenal time! The staff went out of their way for all of their guests, the food was delicious and the atmosphere was perfect! There was something to do for each of us!

When you hear about a ""Grand Dame"" hotel, you get the picture in your mind of a 5 Star Hotel. The furniture in the rooms was old pine wood. The curtains looked to be bought at JC Penneys and hung on cheap rods. My room was not what I would considered clean. There was hair in the bathtub and rust stains in the toilet bowl. When I checked out there was a 23 service charge on the bill. I was told this was a manditory tip for the Housekeeper and waitstaff. I didn't leave a tip in the room for a purpose. This service charge was never spoke of when I checked in.

What a beautiful escape! Great skiing, lots to do, and you feel well taken care for... the staff is wonderful. We only wished we could have stayed longer
