Quality of foodWe only had breakfast, which unfortunately on both mornings was cold. The quality of the food was good, but unfortunately the buffet type hot food did not even keep warm. spoiling our enjoyment of it.

Iconic building in excellent location left to grow tired The building must have been splendid when it was new and ought to be now, but for the fact that it has been allowed to get grubby, inside and outside. The fittings are sparse and poor quality. You are meant to be convinced by its minimalist credentials, but no-one is fooled. The hotel needs refurbishment. Cardiff, a great place, deserves better treatment.

Appalled at the price of breakfast!A high standard hotel with a ludicrous price for breakfast. £18.50 for a buffet breakfast where you may only wanta tea and some fruit is outrageous. Even more so was adding a service charge when it is a breakfast whereby you help yourself! I also thought the broadband charge was excessive. Little things and courtesies count - St. David's does not live up to expectaions.

Change for the worseHaving stayed a few times before when it was underc the banner of Rocco Forte the change under the new ownership is apparent - and not for the best. The installation of a large screen showing continuous 80's music is a disaster - people were moving away from the area as converstion is now rather difficult. The bar area has become a down town pub, kareoke wouldnt go amiss. Incidentally one of the staff agreed with me.Attention to detail is now sadly lacking from the welcoming smiles on all staff. Customer journey...not anymore.It is no longer a 5 * establishment.

Fantastic Anniversary Treat!We had a fantastic stay which we'd booked for our anniversary. On arrival we were told we had been upgraded to a junior suite! The room was fabulous with a lovely balcony and amazing views over Penarth and the city centre (including the Millenium Stadium). Both the room and hotel had a real luxurious feel and the staff were all very friendly and couldn't do enough for us, so we felt we'd had a real treat. Breakfast was also fantastic and the dining room also overlooked the Cardiff Bay. Although not cheap it was well worth the money for a special night. (Our only tiny criticism is that the bar looked a tiny bit dated compared to the rest of the hotel which was stunning, but this didn't take away from the atmosphere or our enjoyment).

I wouldn't stay there againI wouldn't stay there again because the £80 massage lasted for 15 minutes not 45, the champagne took 50 minutes to arrive, we had trouble booking lunch in the spa as they were 'too busy' (despite booking 3 months in advance - they need to look at their staffing levels), the check in took 2 hours for 7 rooms, we weren't told that breakfast was included so arranged something else and were still charged for it and we didn't have the complimentary gifts that were promised in the room. We had a nice weekend but it was by no means to the thanks of The St David's Hotel and their nonchalant staff.

Lovely city breakThis was our first visit to Cardiff. We made plans at the last minute on a Friday using LateRooms and travelled by train from London Paddington. The St Davids Hotel & Spa was in a lovely location and we enjoyed watching the wildlife right outside our balcony in the nearby bird sanctuary. The concierge staff were especially helpful and easy to approach for directions and ideas. We travel alot and many of the hotels we have stayed in recently have I-Pod capabilities, something the hotel should consider. The surrounding area was full of activities, all within walking distance and even central Cardiff was only a 15 minute walk. Both the hotel and Cardiff are on our list for future return visits.

General commentsOn arrival the hotel did not give the \"wow\" factor. It was very sterile with hardly any colour. The settee has seen better days and was stained. The receptionist did not explain where anything was, times for breakfast or departure etc.Our room was pleasant but found it quite strange that the shaving mirror would not accept a British razor which led to my husband shaving in the bedroom.The balcony gave a good view of the bay but there were no chairs provided to sit on so that to enjoy the view you had to stand up.For a 5 star hotel and the price I paid I found it quite over the top to be charged £8 for parking only to find that on departure the barrier was up so I could have driven out without paying.On a positive note we ate in the restaurant and the food was excellent.Overall we enjoyed our stay but I am afraid that the hotel is not 5 star standard in my view

Standard of roomVery disappointed at the quality of the hotel room. We were expecting much more from a 5* hotel that was supposed to cost £350 a night. The service was excellent though and we would return, but not at the full price. Bar very expensive.

30th Birthday CelebrationMyself and my daughter booked to celebrate her 30th birthday - quality time together before the larger get togethers!!.Hotel staff were welcoming, whether on reception, in the bar or restaurant.Spa was amazing and we did spend quite a lot of time using the facilities.Location was ideal for enjoying the Bay nightlife and boat trips.Thanks for a great time.

We stayed at the St Davids hotel to coincide with the Take That concert , we expected it to be a busy time for the hotel and weren't surprised to find that our room wasn't ready on time. We were however allowed to use the spa facilities whilst we were waiting. Our room was finally available at 3pm and we were dissappointed to find that our executive room was fairly ordinary considering we were paying £180 for the night! We did ask that we were in the correct standard of room and told we were. We will definitely visit again , but only if we can secure a much cheaper tarriff.

five staar hotel,I think not!If this is the best Cardiff has to offer then I hate to think what the others are like.When we arrived it was like chaos at reception.We had to que at reception to be told our room wasn't available and we couln't chack in.This was an hour after we had booked it for.The mirror in the room was filthy. We only had one large bath towel. At breakfast we were shown to our table ,to then be left not knowing what we were meant to do and weren't offered tea coffee or toast.The room may have been at a discounted rate but it was still way over priced and should not have been rated as 5 star.I have received better service at a £30 a room days Inn !

DisgustI think that for a 5 star hotel to be put by a window in the dining room for breakfast and have a clear view of old bathroom bin bags including used cotton buds is not what is expected. A comment and an apoogy would be good as the staff in the restaurant seemed singullaly disinterested. The hotel is a great building and the rooms are great, but the whole place, furniture and fittings in particular are looking very tired. Needs a good makeover.
