short sojourn in Embleton My husband and I spent 2 nights at the sportsmans inn -Fantastic location 10 minutes walk across golf course to beach. sea view from room was spectacular! Hotel every bit as good as expected from description . spacious room with newly refurbished en suite soft leather settee in livung area. food was excellent -truly scrumptious -prices above average pub price but we thought it was very good value for standard -starter cassolette was fabulous! Delicious home cooked breakfast kippers or full English- We will be back! Marie and Chris July 2009

Accomodation at The Sportsman HotelThe food was excellent, the staff friendly but the room was a real disappointment. We opted to pay extra for a "Superior" room but this came with peeling wallpaper (obvious damp issues in both the bedroom & en suite) & weeks of dust. There were used bars of soap + an empty soap dispenser in the bathroom & it was obvious that the place hadn't been cleaned thoroughly for a long time. The bedding & towels were fresh & clean however. It appeared that they were concentrating on building their reputation for good food & the rooms were an afterthought. Outside on the terrace, what could have been a pleasant seating area overlooking the sea was instead just grey concrete flags with empty planters/barrels etc which could have been planted up with a few plants to make it more inviting. I would have liked the opportunity to discuss this with the manager on departure but at 9am, the only staff available were those on breakfast duty & I didn't feel it was appropriate - particularly as there was also a problem with the rate they wanted to charge me - £32 dearer than that quoted by LateRooms.com. Fortunately, I'd printed off the booking form so they had to honour it although if the manager had been available, I would have asked for a further discount re the interpretation of "superior" room.

Fantastic views, some attention to detail could make it betterRoom 14 is large and the views down to the coast and over to the castle are spectacular.Breakfast was tasty - locally smoked kippers or cooked EnglishDon't get me wrong the hotel was generally good there were just some things that let it down and I expect some attention to detail and added touches may see it shine. Superb views of the coast and Dunstanburgh castle. Excellent service and food. The bedroom we were in needs more thought and attention to detail, but had everything needed and was clean. Good bathroom.

Sportsman InnA friendly easy going establishment. The food is good and the bar pleasant and congenial. There are a number of good walks from Embleton to Craster, Howick and Dunstanburgh Castle. Well positioned for travel around Northumberland.Overall run on a laissez-faire basis but adds to charm.

Potential but some way to goThe location is excellent as was the quality of the food. However, the attention to detail was poor and the rooms are not worth more than £60 per night. Minor mistakes made this stay less enjoyable than it could have been - Drink order wrong, no napkins given, no bowls in the morning for cereal, rooms generally in need of an overhaul. Then we were overcharged for the room in the morning and had to produce the late rooms print off.Could be fantastic, isn't yet

the spotrtmans innwe had a lovely stay here. It was local to lots of places to visit and the walk up to dunstanbrough castle was a great way to start the day. The views from our room across the sea and up to the castle were fantastic. Well, what can I say about the food except amazing!!! It was lovely to sit and eat dinner with the views on 1 side and a roaring log fire on the other.

SPECTACULAR VIEWSAside from the room being a bit chilly, albeit on a weekend when the wind was freezing, and we were promised sleet, rain and freezing temperatures, (which was rectified swiftly by 2 additional heaters brought to the room), the views were spectacular, the food which all seemed to be sourced locally was delicious, and the service was excellent. Would definitely recommend this lovely inn, which is set in a beautiful, peaceful setting with spectacular views.

Accommodation not great but worth it for the foodNobody was there to greet us when we arrived. There was a band playing until midnight. Our room was a bit shabby. However, the restaurant was fantastic and completely packed. The best meal I've had in a long time.

Cobwebs on every light !!! Our en suite extremely small & smelt very damp. Daughter's en suite huge with free standing bath but no hot water on Saturday evening, so she had to use our electric shower! Bedrooms distinctly chilly too.However, the staff were extremely friendly & helpful & the food was very good. We could see exactly what the hotel was trying to achieve, but it could do with a little more attention to detail & perhaps financial input.

The room was a little shabby, drawer front fell off when opened, kettle was on the floor and there was only a net up at the bathroom window ( we had to hang a towel up!) There wasn't anywhere to hang up all the towels and the towels were not replaced at all throughout our stay. More of a bed and breakfast place than a hotel. Quite expensive...not good value for money.The one good thing is the location which overlooks the sea.

Booking for 2 nights was made in January so no excuse can be possible for the poor, unsuitable accommodation provided! Single room described as 'lovely, cosy' 'ideal' was far from it:- unacceptably cramped; little storage space and no surfaces available - this meant kettle had to be hazardously boiled on floor; poor quality furnishing; no chair; elderly TV did not work (and had not worked for some time), small lamp did not work, remaining light overhead had one bulb out; en suite tiny. Was moved to larger pleasant room for second night - had to get rid of previous occupants' dirty towels. The bed in the double room booked could only be accessed properly from one side - a real hardship for arthritic knees! Kettle again had to be boiled on floor. Food and wine excellent but over-expensive. Overstretched, pleasant staff struggled at times to provide efficient service eg despite reminder, wine finally arrived as we finished our main course. Overall a beautiful location but sadly lacking in quality of accommodation and efficiency. Check account carefully - we and other guests found that our deposits had not been deducted.

we booked a double with sea view @£85.The room was generally comfortable with the exception of1.matress was to small for bed frame so getting in and out of bed meant hitting legs off frame2. no hairdrier3. kettle on the floor4.shower quite small and not to clean 5 no curtains in bathroom(nets) so if put light on no privacy6. Cables from tv hanging down

Very friendly people, let us have a late breakfast which was delicious. Lovely views as well. Room was a teeny bit shabby though - could have done with a better shower, lick of paint, better TV etc.

The hotel did not get the booking from Late Rooms and was fully booked. We had to find other accommodation. The manager has since removed his hotel from the Late Rooms booking service

The hotel had a rustic feel to it, however it was very clean, the staff were extremely friendly and made our short stay enjoyable.Food was superb a good choice of wines and beers.We would definitely stay again.

Our double room was a good size and had a great view. The bathroom was very spacious but would have appreciated a towel rail or somewhere to hang the towels and when we ran a bath the hot water was no more than luke warm. The bedroom television did not work and appeared to be a holiday camp cast off ( the word \" Butlins\" etched on the top lefthand corner of the screen was a bit of a clue). The staff we met during our stay were all very friendly and we truly enjoyed our evening meal (fish of the day).
