| This was my first tropical resort vacation and I'm happy to say it was a good choice. I stayed for a week w/ my girlfriend from Dec 17 - 24, 2007 and had a really good time. Nice beach, pools, room and staff. Everything is still pretty much new. It has a nice aesthetic throughout. Resort is quite large. There is a lot of walking to do here (although there are minibuses that can zip you around the grounds). Food is the only issue we could raise. We did not try any of the a'la cartes. Only the buffet and snack bars. It ranged from horrid to delicious.
All in all, we thought it was a great place to relax and unwind. We are budget conscious, and with that in mind, we would return again to La Salina, if the price was right. It certainly was this time around. |

| If you are a spoilt, super indulged, expect-the-best-immediately Canadian, then don't go to Cuba. If you are open to an amazing cultural experience, (whether you agree with the politics or not), and can approach the vacation as a non-life-threatening adventure, then we highly recommend this hotel. And if you want to show your Canadian children how the other half lives,then take them to Cuba & get away from the resort now & then. So what if it took them 4 hours to come up with a third bath towel for the three of us. The sincere apologies and smiles on the two chambermaids' faces adequately compensated. Go with no food expectations -- you'll still eat like Cubans can only dream of eating. And you wont return malnourished. But the same weight as you left, which is more than you can say if you go to one of those obnoxiously overcatered resorts that dot the rest of the caribbean. We were overwhelmed by the friendliness and smiles of all the service people, from the front desk to the room cleaners. Ous SunWing rep, Manuel, was beautifully friendly and exceptionally resourceful. Most people were happy to talk about their lives, especially the folk we met as we drifted around Havana's Old City on foot. (Take the Bus Tour one day to get an overview, then use the same bus another day just for transport for 40 pesos return,-- they'll drop you off in Old Havana & collect you 6 hours later).
The nightly shows on the resort were world class -- the energetic dancers moving effortlessly from classical ballet to salsa & tango; the acrobats as good as any in Cirque de Soleil.
Take a book to read if you have to wait a long time in line,(like booking for the a la carte) or get to know interesting people before & after you in the line(even chainsmoking Quebecois or beer-for-breakfast Ontarians that are the predominant clientele can be objects of cross-cultural curiosity!)
If you're a crazy cancer-hungry sun worshipper, then avoid Varadero & the North Coast in our winter months; in the week of New Year it was cloudy, even chilly. But not unpleasantly so.
The resort is enormous --3000 people in 1000 rooms, but so spread out that it's not a croded feeling at all.
