This is NOT the experience you would expect from what is supposed to be a grand hotel. Decorating is laughable. We had two non matching (diff style, diff color) pull out bed sofas... next to each other along the same wall as our bed (Really!). Ironing board was perched against wall opposite the two sofas along with two little 8x10 pictures. Sound 5 star to you? We stayed in the Publisher's Suite! The bed was horrid. Two huge depressions, made it impossible to get comfortable. The TV faced the bed... and was about 6 feet in the air and doesn't tilt downward. Stained industrial looking carpet, No AC, No Fans, No screens, No protection from falling out of windows that would open from almost the floor to 6 feet fully opened. All night... sirens, ppl partying, cars honking... Sheets were stained, yuck, asked for new... they came up and remade bed with the old sheets. Dining areas are in basement with low ceilings white leather, not edgy, but very clich?d "modern" look. If you are looking for something memorable, romantic or chic... this isn't the place. We couldn't stand it and left before our reservation ended! The high point is that the staff was very pleasant!

Exceptional from beginning to end and in every respect. You certainly get what you pay for! We fell on a very good room rate and consequently expected to be put in an airing cupboard or underground box room (especially as our stay coincided with the final few days of the festival). But everything was first rate, a truly five star hotel experience. I would have no hesitation in recommending The Scotsman and hope to return again very soon. In short we could not have been happier with our stay and it's bargain price made it all the sweeter. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Excellent in every way. From check in to check out, I was taken care of at all times with prompt, professional and non-obtrusive service. Ideally situated, and excellent in every way.

Very nice hotel with lots of character, very convenient for Waverley Station. Room facilities first class and staff very friendly and efficient. Only minor quibbles I had was that the room was unbearably warm and that the air-con did not seem to be working and also that the fire alarm went off in a false alarm at 7 am...twice!! I would definitley stay here again.

Forget Gleneagles; if you want a classy Scottish hotel look no further than the Scotsman in Edinburgh. The attention to detail in every aspect is stunning; from the staff, the rooms, the food, the health club. Outstanding. Check out came too soon.

We had a fantastic night at this hotel. The customer serivce was top rate from the moment we arrived, our room was of a high quality with many extras including a bottle of champagne and a birthday card for my partner! THere was a huge variety of 'cow shed'products in the bathroom and the huge shower was divine. The leisure facilities were also top rate with well equiped ,clean changing rooms. The only drawback was that our room was very hot and we had to sleep with the windows open all night

Superb hotel, gave me the best upgrade i have ever been given - the penthouse suite on the top two floors ! superb doorman, friendly helpful staff however they have a major upgrade going on at the moment which is quiet and non intrusive but does mean that one of the restaurants and the main bar is not available . in general a top class quirky hotel, a bit maze like on the interior but a superb place. excellent pool in basement. Access very close to Waverly perfect if arriving by train.

The hotel was lovely, only criticism is that the TV in our room kept losing reception and switching back to the menu.

Fantastic stay in a fantastic hotel. Staff could not have been more helpful. We had one or two little gripes, more down to our personal requirements than the hotel itself. We both have disabilities, so the lack of parking was a major issue for us. We ended up parking about a 5 min walk away, but it might as well have been in another country! The room we were allocated had a bed which was only 6 feet long. That's fine for most people, but I'm 6 foot 5 inches tall! We were moved to another room with a bigger bed, so ended up okay. Only other thing is the stainless steel swimming pool. There are no pool lights, so it's VERY difficult to swim in, because of the mood lighting. Great if you simply want to relax. Useless if you really want to swim.

My girlfreind had visited the hotel before and highly recomended it. I brought her away as a suprise. I doubt we will be staying again. The room was very small although of a high quality. The bed was terribly uncomfortable and the room was as hot as a sauna. The noice from the drunks on the street was unbearable. All in all we had one of the worse night sleeps we can remember!!!!!! All this for £300.On entering the room the lights did not work - maintenance was sent up to sort this out. The room phone did not work and the music system link to the bathroom did not work. On the positive: the health facilities were excellent and the concierge are great.

We stayed here for a mixture of business and pleasure just a week after returning from our honeymoon. I had a business meeting on the Monday so we stayed Sunday and Monday night. This is a proper 5* hotel. Our room was huge probably one of the biggest hotel rooms i have stayed it, it was a borderline suite, with a huge Super Kingsize bed, and a full sitting and relaxing area where the table had a built in monopoly board. high celings and a serving hatch so you did not get disturbed in the morning if you where having breakfast in bed or room service. Bathroom was actually on the small side given the size of the room but that is only from the point of veiw of someone who loves to spend time in there., with Cowshed toiletries which went down a storm. Great location only 5 min walk from Princes street and the heart of Edinburgh. My wife assures me the leisure facilites are top notch also. We highly recommend this hotel for those of you seeking a luxurious and relaxing stay in the heart of Edinburgh and at just £139 per night an absolute bargin for the level of qaulity on offer. Would definitely stay again if the occasion arose.

The service was excellent, from minute you arrive you are looked after very well, valet parking was good but a bit expensive at £20 per day, the room we were in was excellent.

The hotel itself was lovely and we could not fault it but the staff were what made our stay a special one. We were treated like absolute royalty by all of the staff, they couldn't do enough for us! including booking restaurants, taxis, helping with luggage and queeries that we had and much much more. this was all done with so much efficiency and a smile, a real personal service!!

Very difficult to find by car as on 2 different roads and no car park just valet service. Attached to a great gym and beauty centre.

Lovely room, but no view since it was on the 2nd floor - however since we got such a great deal and we've been to Edinburgh many times, that wasn't a problem. Toiletries in the bathroom were fab and the service overall was excellent. Would also recommend the food in the hotel's bar next door. Would definately return.

Stayed here Easter weekend 2007 and got a fantastic deal through late rooms. Having stayed several times before, we know the rooms within a given grade differ greatly, so we requested a particular room. On arrival we were given this room, despite the fact that it is a grade above that guaranteed through late rooms. We had a great breakfast in the room, which arrived promptly and was piping hot, which is not always guaranteed from room service. My only criticism would be the room service menu for dinner. Perhaps, given how nice the rooms are, a more varied menu would encourage more guests to enjoy the rooms. Only one vegetarian choice and very heavy on fish and seafood leaving only a burger (which was unavailable when I called) or a £25 steak.

Everything about the hotel was good except for the access when travelling by road owing to local restrictions in road access. The entrance to the hotel is also very easy to miss as it is via an alleyway off the main road. The only parking area at the front of the hotel is in a bus lane. Once inside, the service was first class.

Probably the nicest hotel I've stayed in in the UK and certainly the friendliest at that price level.

Thank goodness we didnt pay full rate. The room was very small and very warm. There was very little ventillation in the bathroom which was uncomfortable. The hotel lacked a friendly atmosphere and the reception area was very dull and gloomy. I was looking forward to staying here but was very disappointed and would not go back
