While on a business trip I stayed a few extra days to play... The front office staff helped me with VERY convenient day a trip to the volcano and a second trip whitewater rafting. I was pleasantly surprised with an upgrade to the NEW floor. While the original rooms are nice and a great deal, my new balcony room had a wonderful bed, flat screen TV, both wired and wireless internet connection and a great bathroom... The tile floor and unique ceiling maintain the warmth of the older architecture. One night was spent on my balcony with a great bottle of wine, thinking about the tranquility of Costa Rica and enjoying the view of the pool and garden. Their restuarant (small and intimate) has some of the best food I have ever enjoyed. Ask them what is fresh/best of the day and you will be delighted... Same great food can be delivered to your room.

we had difficulty finding it and then finding our way onto the road out of town - this was not the hotels fault but was frustrating - we wouldn't go again without gps. they have a beautiful courtyard, the breakfast was simple and tasty, staff were very helpful. water was hot, bed was comfortable. rooms were small but very nice and clean.

Cheap. Renovation. Very basic, a little too much noise, lots of renovation. Unfortunately, the restaurant was also closed for renovation. So, I ate a few protein bars for dinner that night. All in all, a cheap place to stay for one night on the way in or out of San Jose, but nothing more.

I had changed hotels four times before I found Hotel Santo Tomas. I absolutely loved the place. It is just a beautiful place and the restaurant on the premises is top notch. It was the tastiest food I had the whole trip. I will never again stay anywhere else when I am in San Jose. It was a wonderful hotel at a great prices. How can you beat that?

This hotel is a beautifully restored mansion and I fell in love immediately. There were beautiful hardwood floors and a bed so comfortable I felt as though I was at home. Everyday the maid service came and cleaned my room and there was never any cause for distrust or concern for my property in any way. I traveled by myself on this trip and as a single female, I felt incredibly safe at this establishment. It is located downtown and very close to the museums, lovely shopping, and wonderful restaurants. The hotel restaurant is fabulous as well. You can eat there every night and have a different incredible dining experience each time. I highly recommend the shish kabob. I was overwhelmed by how helpful the entire staff was all the time. They spoke good english and helped me to book trips, find restaurants, shopping, whatever my need. I spent a good amount of time around and in the pool area. It was incredibly relaxing to sit by the pool in the morning and enjoy a cup of some of the best coffee I have ever drank in my life and read my book. Every morning breakfast was right on time with the freshest fruit and delicious pastries. My experience at Hotel Santo Tomas was exquisite. I will return to Costa Rica again, and when I do I can't wait to go back and visit my new friends at Santo Tomas.

If you are like me and looking for a clean, safe place to put your head after a full day of travel and adventure, then this hotel will satisfy your needs. If you travel to spend your time in a plush hotel, then keep looking. I found the hotel workers to be very helpful. Internet was available with ease. It was a comfortable situation. No question about safety since the obligatory iron gates that cover all sorts of structures in San Jose are present. Great location. I was able to walk to the National Theater as well as all the museums. No need for a city tour when you have this kind of location and helpful hotel hosts. The only complaint is that the free breakfast was a little skimpy, even for package standards. Otherwise, I'd be happy to return to this same spot for another adventure in Costa Rica.

A nice place to come to after a day of adventures. Friendly personnel, very clean grounds and not too crowded, more like a small family atmosphere. Free breakfast consist of fruits and pastries, coffee and juices which are served at 7:00 AM. They were very courteous to family members that came to visit me. Do not worry about location, area around hotel no different than New York City or Miami.

The staff were super friendly and great, and the restaurant was great - but this is FAR from the airport and the room smelled like mildew :( I wanted to like it much more than I did.

Although San Jose is a packed, chaotic city this hotel is spacious and relaxing. It had a bed & breakfast feel with only 20 rooms, each guest getting to know the other. The staff went above & beyond over & over. XYZ at the front desk was able to answer questions and give suggestions. It was remarkably clean and we felt safe in the midst of the chaos of San Jose. We slept each night with our door open with only the chain on the door to allow air to circulate. Our sheets were changed every other day. Our room was cleaned right when we left. The water was HOT! A nice surprise! There was a great pool area and outdoor workout space. The Oasis Restaurant attached to the hotel was truly a treat. The waiter & bar tender makes a great cafe con leche & the chef's food was good. It as close to everything downtown the market and tourist shops. Across the street is a great little Soda where you can get a huge meal for 4 and beside that is a great little bar. We were impressed with our little Bed & Breakfast and we will be back, if not for San Jose, for the remarkable service and individual attention we received at Hotel Santo Tomas.

Surprising ambience. No street presence. When driving up to this hotel you may be tempted to keep driving. The street is grimy and eerily empty at night. But once you step into the lobby and are greeted by a very hospitable staff (as well as the owner), you find a very pleasant space with huge rooms and a small private pool. The owner wants to make you stay a pleasant one. They are currently renovating, and planning to add eleven more rooms.

Never again, no parking, pictures are not truly reflective of what you get. Checked in and out within 2 hrs. Very unsafe neighborhood parked car out front went in to get bags, on returned I interupted two guys breaking into auto. We felt as if the recption guy was stalking us, every time we opened our room door he was just standing there, strange very strange, Buyer beware!!

Have stayed before 2X and this is main reason to return. Presumptuous as it may sound, I feel like a family member. Great Breakfast, excellent restaurant, broadband internet, Knowlegable travel and tour assistance and a great staff. I had a great week. Hope I can return in June.

Nothing. Everything. This hotel was in a horrible area. Hotel was in a center of the city, 30 min from airport and it is nowhere near 3 stars.
