The clear advantage of this hotel is the location just next to York station which is ideal for everyone arriving by train. The Royal York certainly has got style, but that is also reflected in the room rates, and only the special advance rate made me booking a room here. The only food I had was breakfast, and since English breakfast and buffet don´t go well together, the food served does not get full marks

Good location next to station and near Lendal Bridge.

Weekend in YorkUpon arriving at the hotel the car park was full, mainly due to customers using the leisure facilities, although we eventually found a space. The receptionist was not very welcoming or informative and the room we were allocated was small, poor quality, the bed was overdue for replacement and generally the room looked nothing like the pictures on the website. The hotel bar was very dissapointing the decor and atmosphere were depressing and totally out of character for the building. The bar prices were very expensive £6.00+ for a 250ml of wine, this may have been acceptable in a 4 star hotel had the bar been more like a typical hotel cocktail or lounge bar. We sat in reception with our drinks on both nights, as it was warmer, brighter and generally more comfortable. Whilst in reception we noted a number of guests discussing problems with the receptionist who was obviously under pressure! Highlight of the weekend in the hotel was breakfast on both days. The restaurant manager was excellent, quickly allocated us to a table and both he and his staff were very welcoming and helpful. The breakfast selection of food was good and to a high standard. In our opinion, this hotel needs both investment and management if it is to be succesful in the future.

The Royal Hotel YorkThis hotel is fantastic the staff are very polite and helpfull the hotel is in a great location a 10 minuite walk and you are in the centre of york . The fitness centre is spot on theres a gym if you want to pump some iron but the baet bit is the pool just the right size .Steam room, sauna and jaquzzi are all next to the pool and are a greatway to relax . The hotels grounds are beautifull and are nice to walk around . The only down side was our bed was abit springy but still had good nights sleep onit and the sauages at the breakfast buffet (Excellant) were abit hard . But we will defanitly be going back.

Early music at the RoyalWe are two friends who stayed at the Royal in order to attend the Early Music Festival in York. Excellent staff. Only complaint that we were led to believe we had to carry our bags up two flights to our room rather remotely located in the garden wing. We are both over 60 and one of us is obviously not very fit and we did not expect to have to carry our bags up stairs at this hotel. Nor was there any need, as we later discovered.

Royal York HotelImposing period building but with modern facilities. Room good (biggest bathroom I ever saw!); reception staff not great, but really good staff service in the restaurant (for breakfast).

Bitter-sweet. Hotel was very much a buisness venue for corprate events, room was clean & had quality fittings, but ours was the smallest room I have ever had the misfortune to squeeze myself into....the room was also unbearably hot & windows were restricted to only opening a couple of inches- maybe in case I was so claustrphobic I threw myself out? No Aircon needless to say. On the plus side the breakfast was without fault, superb quality & service & the reception staff were also friendly & helpful. Would I stay again? if I had a decent size room with reasonable temperature control-yes! if you paid me I would not stay another night in the room we were given!

Great location for visiting York on foot, most attractive, delicious food. My 16 year old grand daughter loved the property, also.

great locationUsually stay at the Royal when in York and when im York its to go to the races, the hotel is in a good location for this as its right next to the station, I would never drive to York if I could help it as the local traffic is v poor. The Hotel is not the cheapest, although you can occassionally get a deal on Laterooms, but has good leisure facilities, grounds and decor. The bar is popular on race days and prices are what you'd expect to stay in a 4 star. One gripe is that both check in and out can take a while due to lack of enough staff on reception .

Noisy but nice!Unfortunatley having booked via the internet I was apparently down for a single instead of twin room. however, we were allocated one and a lovely porter walked us to our room - quite a walk down and under the hotel to the newer part. The room was well appointed but so so very hot and humid. The room looked straight out onto the Post Office sorting office and was so noisy we couldn't keep our window open to cool the room down as we couldn't sleep.Lovely hot water for a shower in the morning and nice towels, however none of the little additions I'd expect from such a hotel, such as shower caps etc.Breakfast was nice, but busy and despite asking for a fork etc. we had to ask 3 times eventually. however, the positioning next to the station is great and the customer service on the whole excellent. We would stay again but it's pricey for a room in which I had little sleep!

FoodWe were disappointed with the evening meal we had. It was a tiny portion (and we're not big eaters) .. not tasty ... not value for money.

Weekend breakThoroughly enjoyed our stay. The staff were, without exception, friendly and helpful. On the day of our arrival there was a wedding with 600 guests but, apart from being unable to use the car park, which was a bit inconvenient as one of our party uses a wheelchair, you would never have known something of this scale was going on. Even with this we were allowed to drop our wheelchair user and the luggae at the door ans then were directed to the nearest long stay car park. We will definately stay here again.

lovely hotelvery beautiful hotel, especially viewing from tha garden also very nice reception area. staff at reception are very friendly and chatty. a birthday card was left in our room for my partners birthday. bedroom was very spacious as was the bathroom. only thing that let it down for me was the breakfast - not really worth the £10 per person i paid. very slow service and not very friendly staff in this section. also not enough choice of food and sauasages were pink inside. would stop at this hotel again i would just vavoid the breaskfast!

The best in York?Great position, first class service. staff all very professional, well turned out, helpful and very welcomoing . Breakfast , Do get down by 8.15/8.30 is excellent(visitors do seem to come in batches-nothing to do with the restaurant) Would stay again without any doubt. Only niggle was paying for a car park , this need to be taken into consideration at £10 per day. Spa etc is a bit small but well stocked, perhaps a bit oversold as a Spa
