Strategic place for visitors to Edinburgh

A major problem--water pipe main broken by road repairers--shut off water for all hotels & a # of homes in area. Our hotel staff handled things calmly, provided bottled drinking water & partial $ compensation to everyone--an indication of their helpfulness in ordinary things, too. The hotel is a bit shabby; but rooms are large & breakfast (ours included in bill) was good. Location can't be beat.

Rooms furniture and decoration bit outdated, but staff very friendly and very well located. I would recommend

This was my first trip to Edinburgh, UK, wanted to see the city and be a tourist for a while. This hotel is in a great location for doing just that. The bus from the airport stops just a short walking distance from the hotel. Its also within walking distance of the castle, all of the bus tours around the city, as well as lots of shopping. It was very clean and the staff was friendly and helpful. I highly recommend them if you're ever visiting Edinburgh for the first time.

Hotel is quite old - the room was in need of some decoration, and as the room was on the top floor the room was very warm - but overall my teenage son and I were happy - the hotel is in the ideal position, right on princes street directly across from Waverley Station, for getting around and seeing all the sights - would use hotel again.

The hotel could do with some refurbishing in this century but the staff was great and breakfast was filling. Also was able to stay on the non-smoking room floor which was a bonus.

The Hotel is clean and the food is excellent but by far the most appealing factor for us is the location situated on princes St right opposite the train station, tour buses and the Balmoral Hotel so is great base for getting out and about, also offering great view of the castle from the front of the Hotel.

Would not recommend this hotel for longer than one night. The location was perfect but the hotel is old and rooms were very small. It was a nice place to stay one night but any longer I would not recommend. There was nothing exceptional about it, just a place to sleep. Definitely needs updating in rooms/baths as they did in reception. However, it was very close to where we went and train station is across the street...just beware of the steps you have to climb up and down to get into station.

On the plus side, the Royal British hotel is in the perfect location. The staff was excellent. Cleanliness of the room was excellent as well. On the negative side, it showed its age badly. Very much in need of a facelift. Carpeting was very dirty and furniture was very worn. If guests require an elevator, as we did, be aware that it doesn't go to the upper floors. (Staff initiated a room change to a lower floor for us without a request on our part! Very considerate.)

We only stayed for 2 nights but it was very central to where we wanted to be and to things we wanted to see. The staff were very polite and helpful, we really enjoyed our stay and would stay there again.

hotel was well below standard will not use it againEntrance to the hotel dirty, and the lift had holes in the formica wall. The carpet was badly stained and smelly. Had to askfor a change of room paint work required a damp cloth toclean the dust of the wood work I did not eat or drink in the hotel.

This hotel is located 2 blocks from the Royal Mile on Princess Street. It provides easy walking access to all of the many historic sites and museums along the Royal Mile. It is within easy walking distance of Calton Hill (1/4 mile). The restaurant in the hotel has a limited menu that is excellently prepared. It provides a nice view accross Princess Street towards the Royal Mile where the castel can be seen off to the right. The room was well appointed and clean, albeit a little small. For example there was a notch in the bathroom door the allow it to miss the sink. The staff were very helpful in finding alternate dining options such as traditional Scottish fare. They were very curtious and allowed early checkin and stored our luggage until our room was ready allowing us to do some site seeing in the mean time. All in all our stay was enjoyable.

Very dowdy. Small dare I say pokey room that hadn't been refurbished form many years! I realise that at a lower price in the city centre you cannot have Claridges, however this was not good. It does have this in common with at least one other hotel I have stayed at in Princes street at considerably more expense - the Caladonian Hilton! Well positioned, good breakfast and charming reception. Pity about the room.

The Royal British is centrally located for all the restaurants and shops on Princes Street. It is a longer walk and hills to climb for the castle or central old town. The eating options in the evening in the hotel itself seem to be limited to a pub menu. Service was OK but the starter course never came and for dessert, we were told the ice cream was not available due to a freezer malfunction (wondered if that was true or an excuse). The room was comfortable although the price was higher (not out of line with other hotels) than stateside.

In my opinion this hotel is perfect. Very good value and location. Service is excellent!

Very basic. Hotel is poorly looked after and badly in need of a make over. It did not feel like a hotel - more like a hostel. The bedding and towles etc were clean - no problems there. Just a rather shabby hotel. All of this would be fine except we had to pay £150 for a double room only for two for ONE night. Daylight robbery. And this did not even include any kind of breakfast! That was extra again! Dick Turpin wore a mask.

The Royal British Hotel Edinburgh is in a great location especially if you are travelling by train. Our room was spacious, great for one adult and two teenage sons and the view from our window was terrific. The full breakfast was good with plenty of choice and variety to suit all tastes. We stayed two nights and would certainly return again.
