This hotel was in the heart of Las Ramblas, but not really a hotel--definitely a hostel. I paid for four people to sleep in a room, they would only give us three towels, we slept on cots, they didn't clean the floors, our roomkey device broke and they had to let us in the room when we needed to go in and out, and refused to give us a new one. The workers were very rude and unhelpful and smoked the whole time in the lobby. I would have moved immediately if I hadn't pre paid orbitz. No AC, it was sweltering! Also, the reception doesn't take calls, so family from home cannot get through--not a good feeling!

Rooms very basic , Although hotel location very central and the staff are friendly it is extremely noisy area and the majority of guest are very young making so much noise during the night shouting and laughing in corridors.Would not stay there again.

We booked Las Ramblas for 1 night prior to leaving for our cruise the next day...the rooms were relatively clean, although on the smaller side (we had 4 of us crammed into a room with 4 twin beds). The bathroom was clean and we had no problems with plumbing/toilets. 2 of the 3 staff members we encountered at the desk were helpful and spoke pretty good English, and they helped us make several (free) calls to our airline as they had lost our luggage. We picked the hotel because of the price, which was low compared to several other hotels in the area, and also because of the great location- steps away from Las Ramblas and in the Gothic Quarter!!! The plaza (Placa Reial) that the hotel is located in is pretty with palm trees and a fountain in the middle, and is a great local hangout place day or night. Lots of action & night life in surrounding area. Biggest negative- VERY NOISY! We didn't get much sleep as you could hear the noise from the crowds hanging out in the plaza until well past midnight, and we were kept awake by several of the guests in our hallway in the hotel who were laughing, talking loudly and slamming their doors at all hours of the night & morning. Breakfast was complimentary and the little breakfast nook in the basement was nice- stone walls but with a modern feel/look to the furniture and decor. Overall not a bad place to stay, especially for the money as most of the other places we looked at near Las Ramblas in Barcelona were pricey! Just be prepared for the noise and bring earplugs, as we had read other reviews and knew what we were getting into ahead of time.

Do not put young people near older couples. We had to have several arguments to be able to get some sleep.

The ladies who supervised and cleaned the breakfast room were very impatient and rude. They insisted on everyone leaving at exactly 10am, and people were having to leave food uneaten, or take it with them.

Hotel well situated and very clean. Drawback is used by groups of students, of which a few displayed bad behaviour and lack of consideration for other guests and teachers with them were not interested in doing anything about it. So I would not use this hotel again.

It my seem odd that I marked it so low but would still rcommend it to a friend annd stay there myself again. This is only because of it's location. Right on the Placa Reial, it's perfect for a weekend break in Barcelona. The bed themselves were fine but I don't think the cleaner did much else than change the sheets. The bathroom had an unpleasent "boys toilet" smell to it and I wouldn't use the glasses provided either. ut for a cheapish, central hotel that you won' spend any more time in than to sleep, it's ok.

The hotel is very well placed near the Ramblas, and certain rooms offer spectacular views over the square. Despite its placing it can be thankfully quiet at night and the square has a really safe feel to it. Due to the proximatey of the hotel, to the heart of Barcelona, it is a great place to stay whatever your purpose of visit is.

Basic accommodation but clean and comfortable. The hotel has an excellent location just off La Ramblas and therefore superb for sightseeing and access to the main sites. The continental breakfast is rather basic but the price we paid, can't grumble ! Would stay again !

My daughter and I had just spent a lovely night in the Melon District Halls of Residence, which was a last minute, very cheap booking due to the Roma Reial not being available so we had high hopes for our slightly more expensive hotel. I was disgusted by the Roma Reial from the minute we walked through its doors. First of all we were greeted by the receptionist smoking, ironically right in front of the no smoking sign. Then later that evening, we were greeted by a cockroach in our room before we swiftly incarcerated the creature with a complimentory glass. When my daughter went to inform reception, she was kindly offered a can of insecticide spray and the comforting words "I'm by myself. What do you want me to do?" from the chivalrous man behind the desk. He did however, allow us to change rooms after my daughter repeated ' cucaracha' (spanish for cockroach) several times in front of some other guests. This time, the room did not have wildlife to speak of but instead reaked to high heavens of chip fat and the air conditioning didn't work due to no electricity sockets actually working. The breakfast in the morning did bring a smile to our faces though as I have never eaten cornflakes with a plastic teaspoon in a basement nightclub venue before.In summary, the Hotel Roma Reial was unclean, unfriendly and unrealistic of what budget accommodation should offer in 2008. My advice would be to head for the Melon district as it's cheap, clean, safe and very friendly. Plus, it also has a rooftop pool and solarium!
