Overall, we had a nice vacation & the resort was nice. Having stayed at other resorts you automatically start to compare the differences. We arrived around 11:30 am-tired & starving( i am 4mo pregnant). We were told that there we could only get a continental breakfast & we had to quickly "run" down to the place before they closed in 20 minutes. Breakfast stopped being served @ 10:30 & lunch wasnt served until 12:30. And since we didnt have a room avail yet we couldnt order room service. Then, we were told that ALL of the rest. required long pants except for 1. & you HAD to make a resv for dinner & could only make it in the AM between the hrs of 8-10:30 & you couldnt call, you had to actually go down to the theater to make them. Also, you only have 2 dinner time options. I have never been to a resort where i was only allowed to choose 2 times to eat. & i am on vacation, the last thing i want to worry about is waking up @ 8 so i can get the resv for the rest we want at & get the time we want since there are only 2 dinner times. So the first nite of course we were unable to get a dinnner resv becuase it was after 10:30.We have been to other resorts who have a dress code but it is usually 1 maybe 2 rest that require long pants but this resort req long pants at all except for 1 rest. You can eat at the buffet any time but who wants the buffet every nite? The buffet req long pants also. We had 2 rooms, our kids had there own 2 doors down, the first nite, they tried to get a shower, the shower didnt work. The resort was very prompt in repairing it but still an inconvenience. Also the phone in their room didnt work, again, they were prompt in fixing but the phone broke again by the last day. The shower had no light in it- had the fixtures but no lights.Our rooms were directly beside the neighboring resorts disco & the music was soo loud we were unable to sleep. This really wasnt much of a nusiance until our last nite when we had to get up @ 5am to leave because all the othe

This place is amazing. The service is fantastic. The beach is beautiful. The rooms are immaculate. The food is great. We had booked 2 rooms for our family, and when we got there they gave us rooms facing the outside fence. We asked them to give us rooms facing the courtyard, and they immediately obliged (for an additional charge. bargain with them they will lower it.) One of the biggest advantages of this place is that it is located in Playacar, which is a secure hotel and residential zone just outside of Playa Del Carmen. The location gave us a lot of flexibility. If we were bored with sitting at the pool or beach, we could go into town within 5 minutes. Taxis charge a flat rate of $ 5.00 one way. (You could walk there in 20 minutes). The town of Playa Del carmen is a lot of fun, with plenty of shops, bars, restaurants, and local taco stalls (some of the best tacos i've ever had). With some of the other resorts, you are stuck in their facility, and the drive to town can take 30 minutes or more, and be quite expensive. We will definately go back here.

This resort is beautiful. We stayed 7 days and were there for my son's wedding. The staff is very friendly. There were times when we had miscommunication, but that is to be expected in a country that speaks a different language than you. The beach area is beautiful with a large area of palm trees to shade the lounging area. We didn't think we would like the trees, but it turned out to be one of our favorite things about the resort. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from for meals, and room service was very quick. Hats off to the waiters who remembered us from day to day and were very attentive to our needs. The only negative thing is the beds are hard and look very uncomfortable, but to our surprise we slept very well every night. We definitely will stay here again!!

the itel itself is nice and dining and bar services were good but the wedding coordinators assisting with wedding of my cousin did not complete all the tasks they said they would even after they were paid for it. in turn, the bridal party had to take time out from their vacation to help the bride and groom set up decorations for the reception. there were timing issues where the staff were late either delivering products or services and for a wedding, that is unacceptable. so if you think of booking your wedding there, make things simple because anything out of the ordinary for the staff may not be completed in time or not at all.

The hotel was excellent. Great pool for kids. Service was great. Everyone was very polite and helpful. This hotel was very big. So you did have to walk quit alot, but the hotel is worth it. The buffet had a large variety of food. It just did not change much from day to day.If you are planning on doing a lot of site seeing, this hotel is far away from most attractions. If you plan to stay at the hotel property, there are many things to keep you busy because there are five hotels and a disco club on the property. You do not have to worry about transportation from hotel to hotel because they have a trolley that will take you.I would definitely return to this hotel.

The Riu Palace Mexico was all I expected from other reviews and so much more. It was more sophisticated and had a European flare. The grounds were gorgeous and I especially enjoyed the old world feel. My husband and I opted for 4 nights 5 days without children. We are in the 35 to 45 range. Mostly we spent our days on the beach. We did take a taxi to Playa Del Carmen to shop. Then we walked down to the newest Riu, Riu Palace Rivera Maya. In comparison the Riu Palace Mexico was the best for us. Although the pool is smaller the beach is by far the best out of all the hotels on the strip. Since most of our experience has been to travel by cruise we enjoyed the all inclusive package with tips and alcohol included!! The service was better than on our cruises and there were plenty of activities to choose from.

We have stayed there six times and have always found the hotel and the staff to be top-notch. The buffet is always varied and good. The specialty restaurants are also very good. Our rooms have always been very clean and the minifriges well stocked. I have seen people complain about the rooms not being closer to the beach. We found out during Hurricane Wilma in 2005 that being closer to the beach can be a hazard to your safety. I cannot say enough about the hotel and the staff in that emergency situation. Staff members risked their own lives to make sure our rooms were stocked with food and drink. They showed up for work as soon as the storm had passed to care for our comforts even though their own homes were damaged or destroyed. My family will always be fans of the Riu Palace Mexico.

The Riu came recommended from several of our friends and lived up to their raves. The room was beautiful as was the hotel itself. The bed in the room was a little hard for my taste, but was very comfortable anyway. The staff in all the bars and restaurants was pleasant and there to serve us in any way we needed. The location could not have been better and the pool and beach were gorgeous. Would definitely stay again and recommed this hotel to friends and family!

My vacation stay was very good, except for the bad smell that lingered throughout the entire facility. I believe it was mildew that must have formed from the extreme humidity of the region. No mildew or dirt or mold was visible, but the odor was EXTREME. So because of the smell I cannot recommend this location to my friends, eventhough the staff was outstanding.

Grounds are wonderfully kept! Service impeccable! My only complaints were the mold smell in the lobbyt, the hard bed, room service has a very limited menu although they do get it to you . Very worth the all inclusive price. I would return.

The staff was very friendly and responded to our needs. It was a great place to go with a family and friends, as we did both. It was a 5 cab ride to 5th Ave, where the shopping is. There is also a shopping area across the street, in walking distance from the hotel. Not as much to choose from there as on 5th Ave, but still alot. There is plenty to do as far as excursions go, but you could spend all of your time at the resort and still have a full vacation. You can parasail from the beach on the resort along with other water activities. Xcaret is a good place to go but get your tickets online before you go. They give you a 10% discount on park entry and dolphin swim online. That is better than any deal you'll get on the street or at the resort. Xel-Ha is also a really nice plpace to spend a day. If you are young and want to party, you'd be better off staying at Riu Tequilla. Palace Mexico is calmer and more family friendly. There aren't many kids there (Palace Mexico) but you can bring your kids there and not worry about what they'll see or hear!

I came to Playa Del Carmen for a friends wedding. Total of 28 ppl on the trip. The trip was originally booked at RIU palace Mexico, but due to swine flu scare the location was closed b/c of low booking. We were upgraded to RIU palce riviera maya. The hotel is so beautiful. Staff is always smiling. Room is always clean, even turn down service! Always serving your needs. Great bars and restaurants to choose from. Many fun things to do...kayaking, scuba/snorkel, parasailing, adventurous trips to jungle for ATV and zip cord fun, TULUM, and many other fun things to do. Fun shopping in Playa Del Carmen. Laying on the beach, or by pool. Swim up bar. Or you can even go back to room for a nap. Wedding was beautiful and loving. Mexico does it right!!

Not only is the Riu Palace Mexico absolutely sumptuous in appearance, but the staff goes out of their way to make you feel at home. Front desk personnel very helpful, the housekeeping staff cordial and friendly, making sure the minifrig is well stocked and plenty of fresh towels daily. The beach/pool staff are exceptional as well. The buffets were good, the "reservations only" dinner was good (we only tried La Bogega, ate out in town the other nites). I would definately come here again. The beachfront is gorgeous and very well maintained: large rocks placed at strategic places in the surf create a very natural looking and safe swimming area. The sand is white, there are no rocks on the bottom to worry about and there are areas w/ lounge chairs in the sun as well as in the shade under the lovely palm trees. Both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks were brought around the beach in the afternoon to choose from and the pool bar staff would deliver beverages to your chairs. The towel girl was very helpful and appreciated the tip we gave her at the end of our stay. Our plan was all exclusive, but we left small tips in dollars every time we ate and tipped a dollar every day for housekeeping, five dollars at end of our stay for the housekeeper and another five dollars for the guy who kept the minifrig stocked. We ordered daily coffee in our room and tipped the room service guy as well. After the first day, we were getting exceptional service, roses on the breakfast tray, super fast room service and extra towels. We didn't see any other guests tipping and I believe our small gratuities were much appreciated by everyone. We'll definately be back.

We stayed here one night, and I wished we could of stayed our entire trip at the Palace. Wonderful food, great service, friendly staff. Just a beautiful hotel with an excellent beach. The only complaint that we had was the beds, which are very hard. I would still recommend this hotel to everyone. The other ammenities of this hotel make up for the bed. We had room service and everything was excellent. Wonderful buffet of everything you could imagine. We can't wait to go back again.

Hotel Staff was unbelievable. Food was very good but I think because your in Mexico it didn't sit too well sometimes. Very nice reserved restaurants and people I know got married and the staff did a wonderful job. Great pool bar and wonderful beach. Look for Jesus and Pedro in the sports bar and John Williams to take care of you at night. I would definately go back again.

My family and I stayed at the Riu Palace Mexico during the last 2 weeks in August. It was by far one of the nicest hotels I have ever stayed at. At 23 years old I have done my fair share of traveling (Portugal, Spain, US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Aruba...). The hotel is extremely clean, people are very friendly, the food is very good and the beach is stunning. If are with little children be aware that there are no laws against topless sunbathing in Mexico. Any beach you go to there WILL be topless sunbathers. I would definitely recommend this hotel. In fact I will be going back during the summer of 2009 and will definitely stay at the Riu Palace Mexico.

This trip was our first experience with a resort as we always go on cruises. It was also our honeymoon. The outside grounds, the beach, pool and lobby area were amazing. The food was also great, if it wasn't so repetitive. However, that is where the good ends. The activites sound great but in reality, there is very little to do. Kayaking and windsurfing were ok, but the ocean there is very wavy. If you want to jet ski or parasail, be prepared to spend a lot of money. There are some activites during the day, like ping pong, water volleyball and so on, but there are so many people it isn't really fun. At night, there is one band who plays every other night and they play the same songs over and over again, and on the nights they don't play, a trumpeter is there, but again, very repetitive. After that, there is nothing. Sure, you can walk across to the club and the Riu Tequila, but even that was boring. The beds are HORRIBLE, so hard and the mattress softeners can only do so much. If you have back problems, do not stay here. We also found a hole in the grout and lots of little bugs in the room. Tried to switch rooms, but they were full. They clean the floors with soapy water and squeegees, but it always felt sticky. I have to say, if we could do it over, we would not stay there. Don't think I'll ever go back to a Riu. For the money we spent, we expected a lot more.

Food was great but you have to get out at least one night and try something else in the "city". You have to get down there early in the morning to make reservations for supper or eat the same buffet every night. It's really good food, but something different is nice.
