This hotel is in a great location, can walk or grab a bus to anywhere in the city from here. Lots of great restaurants and bars nearby. The staff was very helpful and friendly, however the room was amazingly small with only one 10'by 14' mirror in the whole room. Also the elevator was extremely small and a little 'iffy'. Over all though we would probably stay there again.

Location and flat screen TV. Cleanliness and size of room. This was a great price for a great location, only one block off Michigan Ave. However, if your expectation is a nice size, clean room with all the amenities, this is not for you. This is a one star hotel, not a 2 star!

Yes, the rooms are small, but we spent minimal time there, and we weren't looking for a luxury experience. Check in/out went smoothly, and the valet ($36/day, as specified on their web site), was polite and helpful. Everything was very clean - no complaints there. The bathtub was showing signs of wear, though, and faucet dripped. Also, paint on the soap dish adjacent to the sink was flaking off. The only significant problem was the temperature of the water in the shower: it barely reached tepid. Oddly enough, you could get the water in the sink piping hot though... It was very convenient for us (location-wise), and the price was right. I can put up with slightly cramped quarters in the room and elevator as long as it's clean, which this was. If they could only get the hot water working in the shower, I'd give this a rating of "good," instead of just "okay."

I work for a police department in the narcotics bureau and I've been in nicer crack houses. We had a King Suite and one bathroom the roof was falling in and the other had mold growing on the ceiling. The toilet ran unless you took off the lid ad adjusted the water hose. There was a smell associated with the mold I think. My travel companions had their room broken into and items stolen by the staff, as there was no sign of forced entry. The elevators are tiny and there are only two for a 16 story hotel. I seriously would not stay here if it was free. I believe that you only get a room in Chicago to sleep, but come on this is ridiculous for a nationwide chain. The limited contact I had with the staff seemed as though they were annoyed by the fact you needed service. Add some more money and enjoy your stay at another facility

It was a decent hotel. I didn't expect too much because it was the cheapest rate I could find. All things considered, for the price, it was in a good location. Good hotel to consider if you are in town for a night or two and don't expect to spend much time in the hotel anyway.

Staff tried to be helpful, were nice people the list is to long, start with a 1am fight in the hall outside our room Needs to be brought up to the Red Roof Chain standards, in need of paint carpet updated HVAC and plumbing. Needs to hire a design firm to clean up the visual impression.

If they hadn't already charged my card i would have left. The room was small, dirty and smelled . There were lots of dead insects in the light fixtures in the elevator. The carpet in the halls was stained. Spend the extra * and stay anywhere else.

The location was perfect but there are plenty of Hotels in the area that probably would have been better. The Door was broken, light bulbs burned out and a leek in the bathroom. The staff was unhelpful and Finally I got a different room. The second room was much better but small. I just can't beleive they gave the first room to anyone in that condition. Also I asked for a smoking room but I had to ask three times and do a dance for an ashtray. I would not go back or recommend this location.

It was close to another hotel so that I was able to get a decent room accross the street.

This hotel is disgusting. Our bed sheets had visible stains, a walk across the carpet in white socks produced black socks, our tub didn't drain, and the same pieces of trash sat in the hallway all weekend. I ironed the bed before we slept in it. The lobby has been refurbished, but the guest rooms are in terrible shape. The rooms are small and the bathroom barely large enough for one person. Our door didn't open or close easily. The elevators are very, very small and slow. The location is great, but you can easily find a much nicer hotel in the same price range.

staff was great - - room was tiny - - couldn't get internet access - - and on top of that, TV was out of commission - - but it was "too late to rectify . . " they did "comp" the parking fee though, so that kinda helped

The location! Dreary, unattractive rooms. Less-than-stellar service. The condition of the room itself was disappointing. The room was small, very basic, outdated and unattractive. There was dust on the carpet in the corners. Only soap and shampoo packets were available in the bathroom. There was no shower cap, conditioner or lotion as most hotels offer. It appears that the sheets were not changed until our last day when we requested same. That day, our room was not cleaned nor were fresh towels put in the room until we called the front desk at 5:00 p.m. During check-in, the female employee who was assisting us took numerous (business-related) phone calls, making the check-in process way too long. I finally had to ask her to please finish our check-in before answering the phone again. More front desk staff is needed! Staff tried to be helpful for the most part. There were other guests on our floor making noise into the wee hours. It appeared that there were many people staying in some rooms. We called the front desk at 3:30 a.m. The employee took a while to come to the 8 th floor. After checking things out, the female employee knocked at our door to tell us that she saw no problem. Due to security reasons and the late hour, we would have preferred a phone call. We had to call the front desk again the next night. The response was quicker that night. We requested a delayed check-out (2 p.m.) due to our plane departure. The front desk personnel said we could stay until 1 p.m. The hotel manager (who was very polite and professional) said he we can chek out at the 2 p.m. Not sure why there was a breakdown in communication. There were very few amenities in the hotel - no computer available and no continental breakfast or even coffee/tea in the lobby. To be competitive, we suggest that rooms be upgraded and the hotel be fully staffed with knowledgeable and attentive personnel.

When it was the Raphael Hotel it was charming. Now it is dingy and depressing. The room was so small you had to go out in the hall to change your mind. The staff was nice, but the rooms were dark and dingy, the carpeting in the halls and in the room were stained and dirty. The maid service was top notch, everything clean and done quickly. Still, don't think I would ever stay there again.

The management simply stopped investing into the hotel. The rooms are not cleaned at all. There was a layer of dust on the carpet. The windows are dirty. The sheet and towels were clean. I suspect that the hotel owners do not pay their staff very well. The staff is very nice but are just overwhelmed with a lot of little tasks. I would rather pay a little more and experience a world of difference.

Great location and price, but the staff was uncoordinated and really poorly prepared for the evening's rush. Hotel was small, but just fine for sleeping and getting ready for the day.

We were planning a little Christmas shopping. The desk staff were smiling and helpful when we checked in. I appreciated the the fast service. The maid staff was friendly and spoke when we arrived at our room. Our room was small and old but it worked for what we needed. Our only problem was lack of heat through the night. When we called the front desk, they offered to send maintenance up immediately, but we chose not to due to lack of time. The front desk staff offered a discount of 30. off our bill which I found quite a nice surprise. Our refund will have to go through online travel and take a bit longer, I would stay here again because of location. It was reasonable rates and a block from Mag Mile. If I were in town for meetings I might choose something a bit more upscale.

The neighborhood is nice and the Red Roof Inn looked nice from the outside. The lobby was ok but I could tell this was not a good place when I got on the elevator. Tiles were broken off right as you got in. The hallway had dirt in the corners and the room was terrible. Extremely small, with old-looking paneling and the only lights were over the bed, one of which didn't work. There were two beds, a small dresser at the foot of the bed with the TV on it - no other furniture - no desk, table or chair. The restaurant - there was one - down the street. Not recommended!

The location was good The room was filthy and the staff was not helpful. There were bugs in the room. Great location, terrible condition of room. If you need to stay downtown and this is the best deal, bring a sleep sack and a pillow case. The beds had bugs and the room was a mess. Asked the staff for a towel and blanket, was told OK but they never came.
